“Salt without prescribing how much.”
— Ezra 7:22

What a profound analogy—comparing the indispensable nature of salt in offerings to the essentiality of divine grace in the soul. Salt’s preserving and purifying qualities symbolize the grace of God within us.

Reflecting on the lavishness with which King Artaxerxes gave salt to Ezra, it’s a vivid reminder of God’s limitless grace. There’s never a shortage when the King of kings bestows grace upon His royal priesthood. Unlike material things that might have limits, the supply of God’s grace is inexhaustible. Scripture assures us: “Ask and it shall be given unto thee.”

Just as parents control access to certain treats, there’s no need to limit the grace of God. We can’t overdose on it. While too much wealth or honor might bring complications, an abundance of grace only yields joy. A person cannot be too full of grace; there’s no such thing as an overflow of grace leading to negative consequences.

Therefore, let’s approach the throne of grace seeking a copious supply of heavenly salt. It flavors our trials, preserves our hearts, and eradicates our sins. We need much grace, and God is more than willing to provide an abundance of it to those who seek it earnestly.

“I will make thy windows of agates.” — Isaiah 54:12

This text beautifully illustrates the imagery of the church being symbolized as a spiritual house, crafted by divine hands, and designed to be illuminated. Just as light was present in the Israelites’ dwellings, the church must have windows to let light in, enabling its inhabitants to see outside.

The comparison of these windows to precious agates signifies the ways in which the church perceives the Lord, heavenly truths, and spiritual realities. Agates, although not the most transparent gems, offer a unique perspective—much like our imperfect faith.

Faith, depicted as an agate window, can be obscured and clouded, leading to a limited perception of spiritual truths. Despite its haziness, glimpses of the altogether lovely One—Jesus—are still possible.

Similarly, experiences—often filled with sorrows and afflictions—serve as agate windows through which we see the sufferings of Christ. These experiences offer a subdued light, allowing us to better understand the depth of the Man of Sorrows’ journey through our own trials.

Sanctification, transforming us to be more like Christ, serves as another agate window. Only as we become more heavenly-minded can we truly comprehend heavenly things. The purer our hearts, the clearer our vision of God becomes.

The text leaves us longing for the day when we will fully see God, Jesus, and heavenly truth face to face. Until then, we embrace the glimpses granted through these agate windows—faith, experiences, and sanctification—as we eagerly anticipate the day when our vision will be clear and unobstructed.
