BASIC SCRIPTURES: 2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-11; LUKE 21:1-4

Date: Undated (General Study)

These two passages focus on the principles of generosity, giving, and trust in God’s provision. Together, they highlight the heart behind giving—whether through cheerful generosity or sacrificial devotion—and God’s promise to bless those who give faithfully.

1. 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 (NIV)

Text :
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
9 As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.
11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Context

  • Author : The Apostle Paul, writing to the Corinthian church about their participation in a collection for the impoverished believers in Jerusalem.
  • Theme : The blessings of generous and cheerful giving, grounded in God’s abundant provision.

Key Themes

  1. Sowing and Reaping
    • Generosity produces abundance (“Whoever sows generously will also reap generously,” v. 6). Giving is likened to planting seeds that yield a bountiful harvest.
  2. Cheerful Giving
    • God values the attitude behind giving more than the amount (“God loves a cheerful giver,” v. 7). Giving should flow from a willing heart, not out of obligation or pressure.
  3. God’s Abundant Provision
    • God promises to supply all needs so that believers can continue to give generously (“God is able to bless you abundantly… you will abound in every good work,” vv. 8, 10).
  4. Righteousness Through Generosity
    • Generous giving reflects righteousness and brings glory to God (“Their righteousness endures forever,” v. 9). It also leads to thanksgiving among those who benefit.
  5. Enrichment for Greater Generosity
    • God enriches believers not for selfish gain but to enable them to bless others (“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion,” v. 11).

2. Luke 21:1-4 (NIV)

Text :
1 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.
3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Context

  • Setting : This event occurs during Jesus’ final week in Jerusalem, shortly before His crucifixion. Jesus observes people giving offerings at the temple treasury.
  • Theme : The value of sacrificial giving. Jesus contrasts the outward appearance of generosity with the true measure of sacrifice—a heart fully devoted to God.

Key Themes

  1. Sacrificial Giving
    • The widow’s offering is valued not by its monetary amount but by her willingness to give all she had (“She… put in everything—all she had to live on,” v. 4).
  2. The Heart Behind the Gift
    • Jesus emphasizes that God sees the heart of the giver, not just the size of the gift. True generosity stems from trust in God’s provision.
  3. Contrast Between Wealth and Poverty
    • The rich gave out of their surplus, while the widow gave from her lack. Her act of faith demonstrates profound trust in God.
  4. Worship Through Giving
    • The widow’s offering is an act of worship, reflecting her complete dependence on God.

Connecting the Passages

Both 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 and Luke 21:1-4 teach about giving, but they emphasize different aspects:

  1. Generosity and Sacrifice
    • 2 Corinthians highlights the principle of sowing generously and reaping abundantly, while Luke showcases the widow’s sacrificial giving as a model of total devotion.
  2. The Heart Behind the Gift
    • Both passages stress that God values the attitude and intent of the giver more than the amount given (“God loves a cheerful giver,” 2 Cor. 9:7; “She… put in everything,” Luke 21:4).
  3. Trust in God’s Provision
    • The widow’s act reflects trust in God’s care despite her poverty, while 2 Corinthians assures believers that God will provide abundantly for their needs (“God is able to bless you abundantly,” 2 Cor. 9:8).
  4. Glory to God
    • Both passages point to the ultimate purpose of giving: bringing glory and thanksgiving to God (“Through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God,” 2 Cor. 9:11; the widow’s act glorified God through her faith).

Application

  1. Cultivate a Generous Heart
    • Reflect on your own giving habits. Are you giving cheerfully and generously, trusting God to meet your needs? Commit to sowing seeds of generosity in your life.
  2. Give Sacrificially
    • Like the widow, consider how you can give beyond convenience or comfort, trusting God to provide for your needs.
  3. Focus on the Attitude Behind Your Gift
    • Examine your motives for giving. Are you giving out of duty, or does your generosity flow from a heart of love and gratitude?
  4. Trust in God’s Provision
    • Rest in the promise that God will supply all your needs (“God is able to bless you abundantly,” 2 Cor. 9:8). Let this truth free you to give without fear.
  5. Use Resources for God’s Glory
    • Whether through financial giving, time, or talents, use your resources to bless others and bring glory to God (“Your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God,” 2 Cor. 9:11).
