BASIC SCRIPTURES:

Jeremiah 23:16-17 (KJV)

16 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.
17 They say still unto them that despise me, The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.

1 John 4:1-10 (KJV)

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

EXPLANATION AND MEANING

These two passages address the critical themes of discernment, truth, and love , warning believers against false teachings while emphasizing the centrality of God’s love revealed in Christ.

  1. Jeremiah 23:16-17
    • Jeremiah warns the people of Judah about false prophets who speak lies, claiming to represent God but actually promoting their own agendas. These false teachers offer false assurances of peace and prosperity, leading people astray by condoning sinful behavior and denying consequences for disobedience.
    • Key points:
      • False prophets deceive by speaking from their own hearts, not God’s Word.
      • Their messages flatter and mislead, offering comfort without repentance.
      • Believers must test all teachings against Scripture to avoid being led astray.
  2. 1 John 4:1-10
    • John provides guidance on discerning between true and false spirits. He emphasizes that genuine faith acknowledges Jesus Christ as fully human and divine, sent by God to save humanity. False spirits deny this truth and promote error.
    • Additionally, John highlights the essence of God’s nature—love—and explains how His love is demonstrated through Christ’s sacrifice for sin. True believers reflect this love in their lives.
    • Key points:
      • Test every teaching to ensure it aligns with biblical truth.
      • The hallmark of a true believer is confession of Jesus Christ and living in God’s love.
      • Love is the ultimate evidence of being born of God and knowing Him.

Together, these scriptures call believers to exercise spiritual discernment, reject falsehood, and embrace God’s truth and love.

PRAYER BASED ON JEREMIAH 23:16-17 & 1 JOHN 4:1-10

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word, which equips me to discern truth from error and protects me from deception. Lord, I confess that sometimes I am tempted to listen to voices that sound appealing but are not rooted in Your truth. Forgive me for any time I have been swayed by false promises or half-truths.

Father, give me discernment to recognize false teachings and the courage to reject them. Help me to test every message, teacher, or influence against the standard of Your Word. Let me never settle for comfortable lies but always seek the pure truth found in Christ alone.

I declare that I will not be deceived by those who claim peace without repentance or blessing without obedience. Remind me that Your Word is clear: there are consequences for walking in disobedience, and I must remain vigilant in following Your commands.

Lord, fill me with the Spirit of truth so that I may overcome the spirit of error. Strengthen my faith in the gospel—that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, died for my sins, and rose again. May this truth anchor my soul and guide my steps.

Help me to walk in love, reflecting Your character to the world. Teach me to love others sacrificially, just as You first loved me. May my life demonstrate the reality of Your presence within me, drawing others to the hope found in Christ.

In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
