BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 PETER 2: 1-10

Basic Scripture: 1 Peter 2:1-10 (NIV)

Our Identity and Purpose in Christ

1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.
2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—
5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Key Themes for Today’s Focus:

  1. The Necessary Preparation (v.1): Holiness is the prerequisite for fulfilling our purpose.

  2. The Process of Growth (v.2-3): We must be nourished to be useful in God’s building project.

  3. The Corporate Calling (v.5, 9): We are not just individual stones, but part of a spiritual house and a holy nation. Our purpose is collective.

  4. The Dual Outcome of Christ (v.7-8): He is both the foundation for believers and a stumbling block to the disobedient.

  5. The Reason for Our Redemption (v.9): We are saved “that you may declare the praises…” Our primary purpose is worship and witness.

Prayer Points:

Father, as I come before You today, shape me according to Your Word.

  1. Prayer for Holiness as Foundation: “Lord, I actively renounce every attitude that destroys community—malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. Cleanse my heart, so I can be a clean, usable stone in Your spiritual house.” (v.1)

  2. Prayer for Sustained Growth: “Father, ignite in me a relentless craving for Your Word. Nourish me with the pure milk of truth, that I may grow strong, mature, and stable in my salvation, fully convinced of Your goodness.” (v.2-3)

  3. Prayer for Unity and Purpose: “Master Builder, fit me perfectly together with my fellow believers. Help me to support, interlock with, and encourage others so that together we form a strong, holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices that please You.” (v.5)

  4. Prayer for Unashamed Witness: “Jesus, my Cornerstone, because my trust is in You, I declare I will never be put to shame. Give me boldness to proclaim You as the precious foundation of my life, regardless of how others view You.” (v.6-7)

  5. Prayer to Fulfill My Primary Purpose: “God, my King, I embrace my identity as Your chosen, royal, and holy possession. Use my life, words, and actions today to declare Your praises and to visibly show forth Your light in every dark place I enter.” (v.9)

Declarations:

Speak these truths over your life, your family, and your community:

  1. “Today, I walk in holiness. I am set apart from destructive sins and set apart for God’s holy use.”

  2. “I declare I am growing in grace and the knowledge of God. His Word is my daily nourishment and strength.”

  3. “I am a living stone, chosen and placed by God. I am connected to and supportive of my spiritual family. Together, we are God’s dwelling place.”

  4. “My life is built on Christ the Cornerstone. I will not stumble in unbelief, and I will not be ashamed in my confession of Him.”

  5. “I declare my purpose: I am a praise-proclaimer! I am called out of darkness to display God’s marvelous light. My very existence testifies to His mercy and grace.”

  6. “I have received mercy, therefore I walk in mercy. I belong to God, therefore I walk in authority. I am part of a royal priesthood, therefore I walk in prayerful intercession.”

Closing Prayer: Eternal God, thank You for the profound truth that I am not just saved from something, but saved for something. I am part of Your great construction project—a living temple for Your Spirit. I am part of Your holy nation—a colony of heaven on earth. Help me to live in the reality of this identity and to fulfill the purpose for which You called me: to worship You and to show forth Your excellence. Let my life be a continuous declaration of Your praise. In the mighty name of Jesus, the Chosen Cornerstone, Amen.

Go forth today, conscious that you are a vital part of God’s spiritual house and a priest in His royal service.
