PROVERBS 23:1-8 (KJV)

1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

Prayer Points

1. Prayer for Discernment in Tempting Situations:

   • Lord, as I navigate life, I will sit in various “feasts” of opportunity and temptation. Grant me the spirit of discernment to diligently consider what is before me. Help me to see beyond the surface to the true nature of every offer and relationship. (v. 1)

2. Prayer for Self-Control Over Appetites:

   • Father, I pray for mastery over my fleshly appetites—whether for food, pleasure, wealth, or approval. Where I am a person given to craving, help me to “put a knife to my throat,” exercising severe self-control to avoid being controlled by my desires. (v. 2-3)

3. Prayer for Deliverance from the Deception of Riches:

   • Lord, deliver my heart from the labor and anxiety that comes from striving to be rich. Cease me from relying on my own wisdom to build wealth. Open my eyes to see the fleeting nature of riches, that they can sprout wings and fly away, so that my trust remains in You, my true and lasting provider. (v. 4-5)

4. Prayer for Discerning and Rejecting Ungodly Alliances:

   • Heavenly Father, expose every person in my life with an “evil eye”—those who are stingy, envious, or manipulative. Give me the courage to refuse their “bread” and their offers, no matter how appealing they seem. Let me not be swayed by their sweet words when their heart is not with me. (v. 6-7)

5. Prayer for Freedom from the Aftermath of Compromise:

   • I break every curse of regret and reversal associated with past compromises. I declare that any “morsel” I have eaten in disobedience or ignorance will not cause me to vomit and lose my blessings. I receive Your forgiveness and cleansing, and I walk in newness of life. (v. 8)

Declarations

1. I declare that I am a person of discernment. In every situation, I will pause and diligently consider what is before me, led by the Spirit of God and not by my natural senses.

2. I declare that I rule over my appetites; they do not rule over me. I exercise self-control, which is a fruit of the Spirit within me. I am not enslaved by the desire for “deceitful meat” that promises pleasure but brings a snare.

3. I declare that my life’s goal is not to be rich but to be righteous. I cease from my own worldly wisdom for gaining wealth. My trust is in the Lord who provides, and I understand that earthly riches are temporary and unstable.

4. I declare that I will not eat the bread of a person with an evil or stingy heart. I am disconnected from manipulative relationships and ungodly alliances. I can discern a person’s true heart beyond their flattering words.

5. I declare that my decisions are guided by God’s wisdom. Therefore, I will not make compromises that I will later regret. The investments I make—of my time, resources, and words—will yield a godly return and will not be lost.
