1 SAMUEL 16: 1-13 (NKJV)

1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”
2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”
4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.”
12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Prayer Points:

  1. PRAYER FOR DIVINE DIRECTION: Like Samuel, pray for clarity and guidance from the Lord in your decisions. Ask Him to direct your steps and show you “what you shall do” (v. 3). Pray against the fear of man that hinders divine assignment (v. 2).

  2. PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL SIGHT: Ask God to give you His perspective in every situation. Pray, “Lord, help me not to judge by appearances or outward stature. Teach me to see people and situations as You see them, for You look at the heart.” (v. 7)

  3. PRAYER FOR THE RELEASE OF YOUR DAVID: David was overlooked by man but chosen by God (v. 11-12). Pray that every God-given assignment, promotion, and purpose that has been overlooked or delayed in your life will be located and brought forth by God’s power.

  4. PRAYER FOR FRESH ANOINTING: As Samuel anointed David, pray for a fresh outpouring of the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon your life for the assignment God has for you. Declare that the Spirit of the Lord comes upon you afresh “from this day forward” (v. 13).

  5. PRAYER TO MOVE PAST PAST DISAPPOINTMENTS: God told Samuel to stop mourning over Saul (v. 1). Pray for the grace to let go of past failures, rejections, and disappointments so you can embrace the new thing God is doing.

Declarations:

  1. I declare that I walk in divine direction and strategy. The Lord orders my steps and shows me what to do. I am not led by fear but by the Spirit of God.

  2. I declare that I have the mind of Christ. I see as God sees and not as man sees. I perceive the heart and the potential in people and situations by the Spirit of God.

  3. I declare that I am not overlooked or forgotten by God. Though I may be in the background, God is calling me forth for such a time as this. My divine moment for anointing and promotion has come!

  4. I declare that the Spirit of the Lord rests upon me mightily—the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. I am anointed for every good work.

  5. I declare that I release the past. I let go of every Saul-season of disappointment and failure. My eyes are fixed on the new king, the new anointing, and the new thing God is doing in my life. My future is greater than my past.

In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
