BASIC SCRIPTURES: GENESIS 11: 27-32; 12: 1 – 6
Genesis 11:27-32 (NIV)
27 This is the account of Terah’s family line. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. 30 Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive. 31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there. 32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.

Genesis 12:1-6 (NIV)
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. BASIC SCRIPTURES Daily 30 August 2023
Reflection:
Genesis 11:27-32: This passage introduces us to Terah’s family line, including Abram (later known as Abraham), Sarai (later known as Sarah), and Lot. Terah, Abram’s father, led the family from Ur of the Chaldeans toward Canaan but settled in Haran. It is noteworthy that Abram’s family journeyed from their homeland, possibly in obedience to God’s leading, although they didn’t reach Canaan initially.
Genesis 12:1-6: God’s direct command to Abram marks a pivotal moment. Abram is called to leave his country, family, and father’s house to go to a land God will reveal. This act of obedience comes with the promise of becoming a great nation, personal blessings, a renowned name, and the role of blessing all nations. Abram, without knowing the destination, obeys and leaves with Sarai, Lot, and their possessions.
Application:
- Obedience in Faith: These passages highlight the importance of obedience even when the destination is uncertain. Abram’s willingness to leave his comfort zone and follow God’s call sets an example of faith-filled obedience.
- Surrender and Trust: Abram’s journey is a lesson in surrendering personal plans to trust God’s greater purpose. He leaves behind familiarity and steps into the unknown, guided only by God’s promise.
- Promises and Blessings: God’s promise to Abram includes blessings, nationhood, and the opportunity to bless others. This reminds us that our faithfulness to God’s call can result in blessings not only for ourselves but for generations to come.
- Journey of Transformation: Abram’s journey symbolizes our spiritual journey. Like him, we may need to leave behind old mindsets, habits, and places to embrace God’s transformative plan. BASIC SCRIPTURES Daily 30 August 2023
- Age and Purpose: Abram’s age (seventy-five) when he embarked on this journey teaches that God’s purpose for our lives transcends age limitations. God calls us to new chapters and endeavors regardless of our age.
- In the Face of Challenges: The presence of Canaanites in the land Abram traveled through illustrates that God’s call may lead us into unfamiliar or challenging circumstances. Yet, His promise sustains us.
As you reflect on these passages, consider how God may be calling you to step out in faith, surrender, and obedience. Just as Abram’s journey led to blessings beyond measure, your journey of faith can lead to transformation, blessings, and the fulfillment of God’s purpose in your life.
