BASIC SCRIPTURES:
Genesis 50:22-25 (NIV): “Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years and saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also, the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.
Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’ And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, ‘God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.'”
Exodus 13:19 (NIV): “Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, ‘God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.'”
In these verses from Genesis and Exodus, we witness the fulfillment of Joseph’s prophecy and his request regarding his bones.
After living a long and fruitful life in Egypt, Joseph knew that his time on earth was coming to an end. He expressed confidence in God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promise to the Israelites to bring them out of Egypt and into the land of Canaan, as He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Joseph made his brothers swear an oath that they would carry his bones with them when God came to their aid and delivered them from Egypt. This demonstrated Joseph’s faith in God’s promises and his desire to be buried in the land that God had promised to their forefathers.
True to Joseph’s words, when the time came for the Israelites to leave Egypt under the leadership of Moses, Moses took Joseph’s bones with him, as had been promised. This act symbolized the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring the Israelites out of slavery and into the land of their inheritance.
Encouragement for the Day:
These verses remind us of the importance of faith in God’s promises and the fulfillment of His plans in His perfect timing. Joseph’s confidence in God’s faithfulness and his foresight in making his brothers swear an oath regarding his bones serve as examples of unwavering trust in God’s sovereignty.
As we face uncertainties and challenges in our own lives, let us take courage in the faithfulness of God. Just as He fulfilled His promises to Joseph and the Israelites, He will also fulfill His promises to us. Let us hold fast to His Word, knowing that He is faithful to bring about His purposes in our lives.
May we, like Joseph, trust in God’s promises, even when circumstances seem uncertain. And may we live with the assurance that God is always working behind the scenes, orchestrating events according to His perfect plan.
