Key Verse
“So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared” (Nehemiah 4:21).
TEXT — Nehemiah 4:21-23
Message
A little fellow applied for a job as a woods man in the north woods, United States. The boss told him he was too small to chop down trees, but he insisted that “I can do it”. The boss then gave him an axe and told him to chop down a sapling. He went chop, chop, and it was done. He urged him: “Try that on this redwood”. The little man went chop, chop, and chop, and down it went. The boss said, “I’ve never seen anything like that; where did you learn to chop wood like that?” The little man replied: “In the Sahara Forest” to which the boss quipped: “Don’t you mean the Sahara Desert?” The little man answered: “Well, that is what they call it now”.
As Nehemiah and his team continued the task of rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem, the enemies of Israel mocked and ridiculed them. They asked, “What do these feeble Jews?” (Nehemiah 4:2,3). When their ridicule didn’t work, Sanballat and his team began to plan an armed opposition. When Nehemiah knew of it, he alerted his people, armed the builders, and altered the shift arrangements to engage workers who were off duty as security guards for the city, and join in the battle should their enemies attack. They only removed their clothes to freshen up and return to duty. This they did till the job was done.
The Jews were ridiculed; the same with Christ’s church today. We are a feeble people in the eyes of the world. We are a small and insignificant group compared to the size and prestige of the world. However, God does not measure His people simply by their physical, financial, material, mental, or numerical strength and endowments. He rates them by the state of their hearts, and how surrendered they are.
God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world to confound the mighty. Despite all the ridicule, we can achieve great things through faith and determination. Don’t let others’ opinions define your life. Those seen as weak often surprise everyone with their remarkable accomplishments.
