DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
The Bible often uses striking metaphors and figures of speech to convey enduring principles. This was the case when the imagery of a harvest was used to describe the judgment of the earth at the battle of Armageddon. In precise eschatological details, it portrays the destiny of this present earth and its inhabitants at the second coming of Christ.
In summary, Christ’s narrative to John the Beloved shows that there will be a two-fold harvest at the end of time. One illustrates the in-gathering of believers, and the other, the treading in judgment of unbelievers. Prophets like Joel, Isaiah, and Jeremiah used harvest frequently as a metaphor for divine judgment in the Old Testament. Jesus also spoke of the coming judgment in terms of a harvest.
At the end of the great tribulation, Jesus Christ will appear in the sky, coming to the earth to set up His literal kingdom. The rulers of the earth at the time will marshal their armies to resist Christ. Inspired and energised by Satan, they will attempt to prevent Christ’s millennial reign. But Jesus will defeat them massively. The picture of a stream of blood reaching up to a horse’s bridle over a distance of about 300 kilometres illustrates the horrible outcome of this conflict.
Meditating on this passage, we are reminded of God’s sovereignty, the certainty of judgment, and the need for individuals to prepare and escape God’s wrath. While the warnings about coming judgment are not intended to instil slavish fear in us, they should propel us to genuine repentance and holy living. Saints who live daily with eternity in view and strive to turn erring sinners to God will be harvested into His kingdom. On the other hand, those who reject God’s salvation will be thrown into the wine press and trodden. The choice is yours today to decide your fate on that terrible day.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
The only way to escape judgment is through the door of salvation.
