Key Verse

“The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself” (Proverbs 11:25)

TEXT — Proverbs 11:24-27

Message

When we think of reciprocating the generosity we receive, many of us think only in terms of repaying our benefactor. Perhaps, recalling an occasion in the life of D.L. Moody, as recounted by an anonymous writer, will give us a different perspective. Once, when Mr. Moody was in New York, he was helped tremendously by a man called R. K. Remington. As he was leaving on the train, Mr. Moody grasped his friend by the hand and said, “If you ever come to Chicago, call on me and I will try to return your kindness.” Mr. Remington replied, “Don’t wait for me; do it to the first man that comes along.”

The law of sowing and reaping has remained universal and timeless. The Christian faith amplifies this further by demanding Christlike love and generosity from every believer. Our text today offers valuable insights into these principles of generosity.

The passage addresses the paradox of generosity. It suggests that those who give freely, in cash and kind, are often blessed with even more in return. It emphasises the principle of sowing and reaping, where generosity begets prosperity. Conversely, those who withhold excessively, whether out of fear or selfishness, may ultimately find themselves in lack or poverty. We equally see that generosity benefits both the giver and the recipient.

We should not overlook the rewards of generosity or how it can lead to prosperity and abundance. We should cultivate a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity, which promotes a cycle of poverty in society. If people generally condemn stinginess and hoarding of resources, heaven cannot endorse such habits as they are underpinned by selfishness and greed. We must always be willing to assist and care for those in need, as practical examples of generosity and liberality. Believers should demonstrate these principles by always seeking to promote the wellbeing of others and allowing our actions and intentions to reflect Christlike character and conduct.
