Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life…” (1 Thess. 4:11). In other words, mind your own business! A quiet life is not an empty life; it is a focused life! The more attention you draw to yourself, the more enemies you attract! Some people have so invested in attention that they would go to any length, and go into debts just to be the talk of town. Jesus lived the most powerful life on earth, but often withdrew to quiet places (Luke 5:16). He wasn’t always on display. Even after great miracles, He would say: “Tell no one.” Contrast that with King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20:12–19. When visitors from Babylon came, he showed them everything, his treasures, armory, palace, etc. He wanted to impress others, but God sent Isaiah to tell him (paraphrased): “Those very people will return and take it all!” His obsession with attention became the seed of national loss! When Hezekiah paraded Judah’s treasures to Babylon, he didn’t realize he was giving the enemy a shopping list! The Lord is warning a user of today’s devotional: Be careful; there is no profit in drawing needless attention.
