While President Nelson Mandela was eating at a restaurant with his bodyguards one day, he asked a diner to join his table. The diner nervously joined the president. While the diner ate, he did not lift his head for once. He was so shaken with fear. He finished eating and left without saying a word. One of Mandela’s guards said, “That man must be really ill. He was trembling all through the time he ate.” Mandela laughed and replied “Absolutely no. He was the warden of the prison where I stayed. He tortured me badly. When I asked for water one day, that man stood above me and urinated on me. He was afraid I would take vengeance on him, as president. But that conduct is not part of my character.” Oh! Wow! Mandela said his character was not determined by position or vengeance. It was Plato who said: “The measure of a man is what he does with power.” As a child of God, when you have the power and opportunity to add one more zero, to siphon those undocumented products, or commit that sin, will you like Mandela say, “That is not my character?” Titus 2: 7-8 says, “Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned.” Yes! Close with this quote by Abraham Lincoln, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” And I will quickly add: “Or put him/her in a secret place where nobody sees him/her!” Pursue Principles and Integrity this year!
