TOPIC: PRIDE DESTROYS
In August of 1986, hundreds of people were thrown into their untimely deaths as a result of the demonic pride of two captains steering two ships: one ship was carrying 1, 234 people and the other was a freighter carrying a cargo of oats. They were both traveling on the Black Sea when the pilot of the ocean liner, Admiral Nakhimov, saw the freighter and radioed a warning. The freighter responded, ‘don’t worry, we will pass clear of each other. We will take care of everything.’ But he was wrong. The captains of both ships maintained that course for forty-five minutes, knowing fully well that they were going to collide. When the captain of the ocean liner saw that there was no way out, he abandoned his bridge. Within 15 minutes of the crash, the 17,000-ton, 525-foot liner sank, so quickly that there was no time to launch lifeboats. Three hundred and ninety eight people drowned. Remember today that, ‘ego kills knowledge. Why? Because knowledge requires learning, and learning requires humility.’ If you are going to grow, you must be ready to learn. And if you are going to learn, you must be humble. Don’t let pride stagnate your growth. Break every yoke of pride that the enemy has put upon you and put on the garment of humility. Hear D.L. Moody, ‘Be humble or you’ll stumble.’ That is the only garment that attracts the honour that comes from the King of kings and the Lord of lords.
