Prayer for July 4th Celebrating Independence and Pray for America

AMERICA
AMERICA

A Solemn Benediction and Prayer of Thanksgiving for America on July 4th

Almighty God, Eternal Father, and Sovereign Lord of Nations,
As we gather beneath the banner of freedom on this sacred anniversary of America’s birth, we lift our hearts in profound gratitude for the blessings You have poured upon this land. From the rocky shores of New England to the golden plains of the West, from the bustling cities to the quiet countryside—every corner of this nation testifies to Your providence. Tonight, as fireworks pierce the darkness and anthems rise to the heavens, we pause to acknowledge that every liberty we celebrate was first authored by Your hand.

We thank You for the courage of our founders, who, guided by conviction and stirred by Your Spirit, dared to declare that all are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” For the farmers who left plows to take up muskets, for the mothers who stitched flags and bandages, for the patriots who pledged “their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor”—we honor their sacrifice. But above all, we glorify You, the God who raises up nations and appoints their seasons, for ordaining this experiment in liberty.

Lord, we confess that America has not always lived up to the ideals inscribed in her founding. We have stumbled in our pursuit of justice; we have fractured the unity You desire. Yet Your mercies are new every morning. As we celebrate tonight, rekindle in us the holy fire of repentance and renewal. Make us a people who cherish freedom not for selfish gain, but for the sake of righteousness. Where there is discord, give us Your peace. Where there is oppression, make us bold champions of truth. Where there is weariness, remind us that “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31).

Bless our land with leaders of wisdom and integrity. Protect the men and women in uniform who stand guard at home and abroad. Comfort Gold Star families who grieve empty chairs at today’s picnics. Heal the wounds of racial injustice, economic disparity, and political division. Make us, in our diversity, one nation under God—not in empty slogan, but in Spirit and in deed.

As the embers of tonight’s celebrations fade, let them leave behind not just smoke, but the enduring light of Your purpose. May America’s future generations know that true freedom is found only in surrender to Your will. Let this land be a beacon not of pride, but of humility; not of power, but of service; not of loud boasts, but of quiet faithfulness.

We pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ,
who alone is the Light of the World,
the Prince of Peace,
and the Hope of Nations.

Amen.

(Optional closing for congregational settings: “And all God’s people said—Amen!”)

Catholic Prayer for July 4th

Catholic Prayer for Independence Day – A Litany of Thanksgiving and Intercession for the United States

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Scripture (Proverbs 14:34):
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”

Prayer of Thanksgiving:
Heavenly Father, Creator of all nations,
on this Fourth of July, we lift our hearts in gratitude
for the blessings You have bestowed upon the United States of America.

We thank You for:

  • The gift of freedom, rooted in the truth that our rights come from You alone.

  • The courage of our founders, many of whom sought to build a nation on virtuous principles.

  • The sacrifice of martyrs and soldiers who gave their lives for liberty and justice.

  • The abundance of this land and the generosity of its people.

  • The religious freedom that allows us to worship You without fear.

Litany of Intercession:
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.

For our Church leaders, that they may boldly proclaim the Gospel as the foundation of true freedom…
We pray to the Lord.

For our civil leaders, that they may govern with wisdom, defend the vulnerable, and uphold the sanctity of life…
We pray to the Lord.

For our military members and first responders, that they be protected in their service…
We pray to the Lord.

For an end to violence, racism, and injustice, and for healing in our divided nation…
We pray to the Lord.

For the conversion of hearts, that America may turn to Christ, the Light of the Nations…
We pray to the Lord.

Prayer for Our Nation (Adapted from Archbishop John Carroll, 1791):
“We pray, O God of might, wisdom, and justice,
through Whom authority is rightly administered,
laws are enacted, and judgment decreed:
Assist with Your Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude
the President and all civil leaders,
that their administration may be conducted in righteousness
and be eminently useful to Your people over whom they preside.
May they encourage due respect for virtue and religion.
Let the light of Your divine wisdom direct their deliberations,
and let equity and the common good guide all laws and policies.”

Consecration to Mary, Patroness of the Americas:
Holy Virgin Mary, under your title of the Immaculate Conception,
Patroness of the United States,
we entrust our nation to your maternal care.
Intercede for us, that we may reject the culture of death
and build a civilization of love,
where the unborn, the poor, and the marginalized are protected.
May your Magnificat remind us that true greatness lies in humility before God.

Closing:
Lord Jesus, You are the King of Kings and the Prince of Peace.
Bless America not with pride, but with repentance;
not with wealth, but with virtue;
not with power, but with compassion.
May our nation’s legacy be one of fidelity to Your Gospel.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.

Amen.

[Optional] Final Hymn: “America the Beautiful” (with added verse: “Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!”)

Why This Prayer Is Distinctly Catholic:

  1. Sacramental Vision – Links freedom to Christ’s redemption (cf. Galatians 5:1).

  2. Marian Intercession – Follows the U.S. bishops’ consecration to Mary (1846).

  3. Social Doctrine – Prays for leaders to uphold life, religious liberty, and the common good.

  4. Penitential Tone – Avoids nationalism by seeking conversion first.

Ideal for: Parish celebrations, family meals, or private devotion. Includes nods to Catholic American history (e.g., Archbishop Carroll’s prayer).

A Patriot’s Prayer for America

Almighty God, Author of Liberty and Defender of the Free,
As I stand beneath the banner of this blessed nation,
my heart swells with gratitude for the gift of America.

For the blood spilled on battlefields from Lexington to Normandy,
For the ink dried on parchments declaring “We the People,”
For the prayers whispered in humble chapels that built this house of freedom –
I give You thanks, O Lord.

Make me a worthy steward of this sacred inheritance.
Where there is injustice, let me be Your hand of righteousness.
Where there is division, make me a bridge builder.
Where there is despair, let me carry the torch of hope.

Bless our warriors who stand watch while we sleep.
Guard the farmers who feed us, the teachers who shape us,
the healers who tend us, and the workers who build this land.

Give our leaders wisdom beyond their own,
that they may govern with both strength and humility.
Preserve the sacred flames of faith, family and freedom
that first illuminated this City upon a Hill.

May my love for country never eclipse my love for You.
May my patriotism be measured in service, not slogans.
And when the fireworks fade, let my commitment
to this great American experiment burn ever brighter.

I pledge my hands to the work,
my voice to the truth,
and my heart to the dream
that all may know life, liberty
and the pursuit of holiness.

This I pray in the name of the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Prayer for a Strong Nation

Almighty God, Sovereign of Nations and Guardian of Liberty,

We come before You today with humble hearts, lifting up our beloved nation in prayer. Strengthen us, O Lord, not merely in power or prosperity, but in character, courage, and conviction.

Grant Us Unity
Where division fractures our communities, pour out Your Spirit of reconciliation. Help us to see beyond our differences and work together for the common good. Teach us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to value each life as sacred in Your sight.

Grant Us Wisdom
Bless our leaders with discernment to govern justly, with integrity to serve selflessly, and with humility to seek Your will above political gain. May truth guide every decision, and righteousness be the foundation of every law.

Grant Us Courage
Make us brave defenders of freedom, standing firm against tyranny, oppression, and moral decay. Inspire us to protect the weak, speak for the voiceless, and uphold justice for all—born and unborn, rich and poor, native and stranger.

Grant Us Resilience
When trials come—whether from within or beyond our borders—fortify our faith and resolve. Remind us that true strength lies not in weapons or wealth, but in repentance, prayer, and reliance on You.

Grant Us Vision
Preserve the sacred ideals upon which this nation was founded: that all are created equal, endowed by You with unalienable rights. Help us pass to the next generation a country stronger in virtue, richer in compassion, and brighter in hope.

Grant Us Your Blessing
May America be a light to the world—not through pride of power, but through service, sacrifice, and steadfast devotion to Your truth. Where we have strayed, correct us. Where we have weakened, restore us. Where we have prospered, keep us grateful.
