Continued from yesterday! The king told the fisherman further: “We wish you to do us a favour. The ring of the king will be given to you to keep, so that on that fateful day, you may present it to the king as the custodian of the king’s royal ring and the title will be given to you.’ The man, while smiling, accepted and said, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” I remember this proverb: “Fear the Greek even when they bring gifts.” Oh good God, he never knew they saw him as an enemy, though he never saw them as enemies. He kept the king’s ring in full view of his wife, who shared in his popularity. Evening came, and morning came, with just a few weeks to go. The same people came back to the house to greet the family just to find out if he had gone to the riverside for his occupation. Immediately they realized his absence, they lured the wife to steal the ring from where the husband kept it for a bogus pay. The woman screamed and shouted in anger. She refused to do their wish against her husband. They insisted with appeals and gifts until she collected the bogus pay and betrayed the husband, whose Lord was his Shepherd. As a young man in my university days, I once asked my late father why those who hurt people were those close to them? He said it was because we share most of our secrets with them. The man’s wife had betrayed him and the wife never told him that the people had visited. Four market days to the D-day, envoys from the king’s palace came and reminded him. He was not at all disturbed because he knew where he had kept it and that the Lord was his Shepherd. With two days to go, he decided to prepare for the celebration. He brought out the small box where he had kept the ring but it was empty. He shouted, “The Lord is my Shepherd!” At this, the wife ran to the room thinking that he was in trouble due to the tone he used. Yes, there was trouble! The king’s ring was missing and the wife was in the plot. No wonder today’s scripture says, “A MAN’S ENEMIES ARE THEY OF HIS OWN HOUSE!” Arise and pray seriously now….(To be continued tomorrow).
