ToggleWanted: A Statesman Like Roosevelt, Churchill and Zelenskyy
Australia faces mounting geopolitical, economic and defence threats, but its political leaders lack the bold vision and decisive communication needed to prepare the nation.
Asleep at the wheel, Australia’s political leaders are failing to confront domestic and international crises that rival the darkest days of the 1930s and World War II.
The contemporary political class exhibits a drift reminiscent of the leadership failures that preceded global conflict and economic depression nearly a century ago.
Just as severe institutional inertia fractured the political landscape back then — until Robert Menzies united the centre-right in 1949 — similar fragmentation is unfolding today, threatening years of political instability at a critical time in history.
How Statesmen Lead
History shows that monumental crises require exceptional, direct communication from a political leader. During the Great Depression and World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill rallied public resolve through regular, transparent radio broadcasts. Today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy maintains daily broadcasts with his besieged citizenry.
Australia urgently needs a statesman who will look the nation in the eye, and, in regular broadcasts, outline the harsh realities we must confront alongside bold policies for national renewal. Such a leader needs to say that a future vision must start with a stark acknowledgment: after a long era of relative peace, we have entered the most perilous geopolitical climate in 80 years.
This danger stems not only from the massive military expansion of aligned hostile powers — China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea — but also from hostile actors using artificial intelligence (AI) to launch devastating cyber-attacks against our economic infrastructure and defence forces.
Rebuilding Australia’s Industrial, Energy and Defence Capacity
In this dangerous new world, a statesman needs to say Australia must become far more self-reliant by:
Industrial rebuilding: Double the domestic manufacturing sector within a decade, prioritising strategic industries essential for survival if global trade routes are severed, while decentralising production.
Energy independence: Utilise our abundant coal, gas, and uranium reserves to guarantee reliable electricity and lower domestic energy costs.
Fuel security: Rapidly expand oil exploration and refining capacity, supported by a minimum 90-day reserve of liquid fuels.
Food security: Expand vital water infrastructure and agricultural output to secure long-term national food supplies.
Financial infrastructure: Establish a dedicated national development bank to finance emerging and expanding strategic industries.
Defence: Rapidly double defence expenditure to meet escalating geopolitical threats and vastly expand cybersecurity capabilities.
Critical stockpiles: Maintain strategic reserves of essential materials, such as water-treatment chemicals and microchips, necessary to sustain basic societal functions during a crisis.
Civic preparedness: Conduct nationwide resilience exercises modelled on natural-disaster responses to educate communities on geopolitical risks and strengthen economic preparedness.
The challenges ahead demand heroic leadership, and new economic and defence priorities.

ODM Daily Commentary
Let’s be honest: Australia is in trouble. And our political class is asleep at the wheel. We face hostile powers expanding their militaries. We face AI-driven cyber-attacks. We face economic fragility, energy insecurity, and supply chain vulnerabilities. And our leaders are more interested in photo ops and international awards than in preparing the nation for what is coming.
The article from News Weekly is a sobering call to action. It compares our current crisis to the 1930s—the Great Depression, the rise of hostile powers, and the leadership failures that preceded World War II. Back then, it took Robert Menzies to unite the centre-right and provide stable leadership. Today, our political landscape is fractured, and no such figure has emerged.
History shows that monumental crises require exceptional leadership. Roosevelt and Churchill rallied their nations through regular, transparent radio broadcasts. Zelenskyy maintains daily broadcasts with his besieged people. Australia needs a statesman who will look the nation in the eye and tell the truth about the dangers we face.
What would that truth look like? It would start with acknowledging that we have entered the most perilous geopolitical climate in 80 years. China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are aligned against us. AI is being weaponised against our infrastructure. And we are dangerously unprepared.
The article outlines eight areas where Australia must become more self-reliant: industrial rebuilding, energy independence, fuel security, food security, financial infrastructure, defence, critical stockpiles, and civic preparedness. These are not optional. They are essential for survival.
The comment section reflects the frustration. One reader says it is too late. Another rightly challenges the inclusion of Zelenskyy as a statesman, pointing to his persecution of Christians and the corruption of his regime. Another asks whether Christians will rise and fight or simply lock their doors and pray for the end.
So here is the challenge: demand better leadership. Hold our politicians accountable. And pray that God will raise up a statesman who will lead with courage, clarity, and conviction.
Australia is asleep at the wheel. It is time to wake up.
