Experts at the University of Michigan in the United States have created a standardized way of assessing the carbon footprint and the nutritional impact of the foods we consume. Called the “Health Nutritional Index” (HNI), it is centered around finding a way to calculate the direct influence of various meals, snacks and drinks on how long we live upon the earth (longevity). HNI works by calculating the health burden of one gram of any food we eat. The study did this on almost 6,000 different foods we eat. You will be amazed at some of their findings; one of which is the health burden of consuming hot dogs. The authors said this: “The 61 grammes of processed meat in a hot dog sandwich results in 27 minutes of healthy life lost due to this amount of processed meat alone.” The researchers further stated that you do not need to make wholesome dietary changes in order to reap the rewards of the food you eat because each food item has its unique contribution. For instance, if a meat-eater replaces 10% of his daily calories with nuts, fruits and vegetables instead of processed meat or beef, he will gain 48 minutes of more healthy life every day he sticks to this. As science is attempting to unravel the secret of longevity, the Word of God equally gives us some recipes for it. Acting otherwise reduces our days upon the earth.
