BASIC SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 15:1 – 6
15 After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
2 And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
4 And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Scripture: Genesis 15:1-6 (NIV)
“After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.’
But Abram said, ‘Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’ And Abram said, ‘You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.’
Then the word of the Lord came to him: ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.’ He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’
Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”
In this passage from Genesis 15:1-6, we witness a significant encounter between God and Abram (later known as Abraham), where God reaffirms His covenant promises to Abram and assures him of His faithfulness.
God begins by comforting Abram, telling him not to be afraid and assuring him of His protection and provision. God identifies Himself as Abram’s shield and very great reward, emphasizing His role as Abram’s protector and the source of all blessings.
Despite God’s reassurances, Abram expresses his concerns about his lack of a biological heir to inherit his estate. He questions God, wondering what good the promised blessings would be if he remained childless. In response, God reiterates His promise to Abram, assuring him that his own biological son will be his heir and the fulfillment of God’s covenant.
God then leads Abram outside and directs his attention to the stars in the sky, using them as a visual illustration of the multitude of descendants Abram will have. God promises Abram that his offspring will be as numerous as the stars, a promise that would eventually be fulfilled through the nation of Israel.
The passage concludes with a powerful statement: Abram believed the Lord, and God credited it to him as righteousness. This verse highlights Abram’s faith and trust in God’s promises, which is counted as righteousness before God. It serves as a foundational principle of faith that reverberates throughout the Bible, demonstrating the importance of trusting in God’s word and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises.
Overall, Genesis 15:1-6 presents a powerful example of God’s covenant faithfulness, His ability to fulfill His promises despite human doubt and uncertainty, and the transformative power of faith in God’s word.
