The Secret of Contentment

TEXT: Philippians 4:10-19 (KJV)
10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
14 Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.
15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Contentment is one of the rarest jewels in human experience. The world constantly tells us that we need more – more money, more possessions, more success, more recognition. Advertisements promise happiness with the next purchase, and social media showcases the highlight reels of others, leaving many feeling inadequate and dissatisfied.
Yet the apostle Paul, writing from a Roman prison, declares that he has learned the secret of contentment. This is not a natural disposition; it is a learned discipline. Paul had experienced both abundance and need. He knew what it was to have plenty and what it was to go hungry. But in every circumstance, he had found contentment.
The word “content” means self-sufficient. It does not mean self-reliant in a proud sense, but rather that one’s sufficiency comes from within – and for Paul, that inner source was Christ. He had discovered that his circumstances did not define his joy. He could be abased (humbled, brought low) or abound (raised up, prosperous). In either case, he was content.
This is the secret that so many miss. Happiness is often tied to having; contentment is tied to being. Happiness depends on what you have; contentment depends on who you are in Christ.
Paul’s famous declaration, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,” is often quoted in the context of achieving great things. But in its original setting, it is a statement about enduring difficult things. Paul is not saying he can climb every mountain or conquer every challenge through Christ’s power – though that is also true. He is specifically saying that he can be content in every situation, whether hungry or full, whether in need or in abundance.
The Philippian church had sent Paul a gift, and he was grateful. But he did not want them to think that his contentment depended on their giving. He had learned to be content before the gift arrived. The gift was not the source of his joy; it was an expression of their love and a fruit that would abound to their account.
Paul ends with a promise that has comforted generations of believers: “My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Notice that God supplies according to His riches, not out of His riches. Out of His riches would be a small portion; according to His riches means He gives commensurate with His infinite wealth. This is not a promise of luxury but a promise of provision – all your need, not all your greed.

COMMENTARY
Introduction: The Rare Jewel of Contentment
In a culture obsessed with more, contentment is counter-cultural. Advertisements, social media, and even well-meaning friends often fuel dissatisfaction. The message is constant: you need more to be happy.
But the apostle Paul, who had experienced both poverty and prosperity, declares that he has learned the secret of contentment. This is not a natural gift; it is a spiritual discipline. It can be learned, and it must be practiced.
The Secret: Christ as Source
The word “content” in Greek carries the idea of self-sufficiency. But Paul is not advocating a Stoic detachment from emotion. His self-sufficiency is not in himself but in Christ. He can be content because Christ is enough.
This is the heart of the secret. When Christ is your source, your circumstances lose their power over your joy. Whether you have little or much, you have Him – and He is enough.
Abased and Abounding
Paul uses two contrasting pairs: abased and abounding, hungry and full, suffering need and having plenty. He has experienced both ends of the spectrum. He knows what it is to be humbled and to be exalted. In all of it, he has learned to be content.
This is a challenge for those who have plenty. It is easy to be content when the cup is full. The real test comes when the cup is empty. Paul’s contentment was not situational; it was supernatural.
I Can Do All Things
Verse 13 is one of the most quoted verses in Scripture, but it is often taken out of context. Paul is not promising that believers can achieve any goal they set for themselves. He is declaring that he can endure any circumstance – whether hunger or plenty, need or abundance – through Christ who strengthens him.
This is the power of contentment. It is not passive resignation; it is active trust. It is the confidence that Christ will provide the strength to face whatever comes.
The Promise of Supply
Paul concludes with a promise that has anchored countless believers: “My God shall supply all your need.” This is not a guarantee of wealth, but a guarantee of provision. God will meet every genuine need – not every want, but every need.
The measure of supply is “according to his riches in glory.” God does not give from a limited budget. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. His resources are infinite. Therefore, His provision is sufficient.
DECLARATIONS BASED ON THE DEVOTIONAL
I DECLARE that I have learned the secret of contentment – my sufficiency is in Christ!
I DECLARE that I can be abased, and I can abound. In every circumstance, I am content!
I DECLARE that I know how to be full and how to be hungry, how to abound and how to suffer need!
I DECLARE that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!
I DECLARE that my contentment does not depend on my circumstances but on my Saviour!
I DECLARE that I will not allow the world’s standards of success to steal my peace!
I DECLARE that God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus!
I DECLARE that I am not anxious about what I lack, for I trust in what He provides!
I DECLARE that my joy is not tied to my possessions but to my position in Christ!
I DECLARE that today, I choose contentment over comparison, trust over worry, and Christ over everything!
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Father, I thank You that contentment is not found in possessions but in Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have looked to circumstances for joy instead of looking to You.
Teach me the secret of contentment – that I can be abased and I can abound, but in all things, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Help me to trust that You will supply all my need according to Your riches in glory. Let me not be anxious about what I lack but grateful for what I have.
I declare that my sufficiency is in Christ. He is enough.
