The Believer’s Authority

KEY VERSE
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” – Luke 10:19
TEXT: Luke 10:17-20 (KJV)
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
When the seventy disciples returned from their mission, they were filled with joy. They had seen remarkable things: devils were subject to them in the name of Jesus. They had authority over unclean spirits. The power of the enemy was broken.
Jesus affirmed their experience. He had seen Satan fall from heaven like lightning. The enemy’s power was already broken. But then Jesus gave them a deeper revelation: “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
This is not a promise for a select few; it is the inheritance of every believer. Jesus has given us authority – not just some authority, but power over all the power of the enemy. Not partial authority, but complete authority. Not authority over some demons, but over all the power of the enemy.
The serpents and scorpions represent the demonic forces that oppose God’s people. They may bite, they may sting, but they cannot ultimately harm the one who walks in the authority of Christ. The promise is absolute: “nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
This does not mean believers will never face opposition. They will. But it means that the opposition cannot destroy them. The enemy may attack, but he cannot overcome. He may bite, but his venom is neutralized.
However, Jesus redirects their focus. “Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” The source of our joy is not our authority over demons but our security in salvation. Our names are written in heaven. This is the greater cause for rejoicing.
The authority we have is real, but it is not the foundation of our joy. Our joy is rooted in our relationship with God. Our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Nothing can erase them. Nothing can separate us from His love.

COMMENTARY
Introduction: The Authority of the Believer
When the seventy disciples returned from their mission, they were astonished. They had seen demons submit to them in the name of Jesus. They had experienced the power of God working through them. Their joy was overflowing.
But Jesus gave them a deeper perspective. Yes, they had authority over demons. Yes, they had power over the enemy. But this was not the greatest cause for rejoicing. The greatest cause for rejoicing was that their names were written in heaven.
The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
The imagery of serpents and scorpions is vivid. These are creatures that bite and sting, causing pain, fear, and sometimes death. They represent the demonic forces that oppose God’s people. The enemy is real. His attacks are real. But the believer is not defenceless.
Jesus gave us power to tread on serpents and scorpions – not to run from them, but to walk over them. They are under our feet. They may hiss, they may strike, but they cannot ultimately harm the one who walks in the authority of Christ.
The Scope of Authority
Notice the comprehensiveness: “over all the power of the enemy.” Not some, not most, but all. The enemy has no weapon that can overcome the believer who walks in faith. Every demonic force, every satanic scheme, every spiritual attack is subject to the authority of Christ – and that authority is delegated to us.
This is not arrogance; it is faith. It is not presumption; it is promise. Jesus said, “I give unto you power.” It is a gift. It is not earned; it is received.
The Promise of Protection
“Nothing shall by any means hurt you.” This is not a promise of immunity from all harm in a physical sense – many believers have been martyred for their faith. But it is a promise that the enemy cannot destroy our souls. He cannot separate us from God. He cannot snatch us from the Father’s hand.
The ultimate harm is spiritual, not physical. The enemy can hurt the body, but he cannot touch the soul. He can cause pain, but he cannot steal our salvation.
The Greater Joy
Jesus redirects their focus. The joy of authority is real, but it is not the greatest joy. The greatest joy is that our names are written in heaven. Our security is not in our ability to cast out demons but in God’s decision to save us.
This is the foundation of all spiritual authority. When we know who we are in Christ, when we know that our names are written in heaven, we can exercise authority without fear. We can tread on serpents and scorpions because we know that nothing can ultimately hurt us.
DECLARATIONS BASED ON THE DEVOTIONAL
I DECLARE that I have power to tread on serpents and scorpions!
I DECLARE that I have authority over all the power of the enemy!
I DECLARE that nothing shall by any means hurt me!
I DECLARE that demons are subject to the name of Jesus, and I use that name with authority!
I DECLARE that my joy is not based on my authority but on my salvation!
I DECLARE that my name is written in heaven, and nothing can erase it!
I DECLARE that I do not need to fear the enemy; I walk in the authority of Christ!
I DECLARE that every demonic attack is neutralized by the power of God!
I DECLARE that I am safe, not because of my strength, but because of my Saviour!
I DECLARE that I rejoice, not because spirits are subject to me, but because my name is written in heaven!
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Father, I thank You for the authority You have given me in Christ. I have power to tread on serpents and scorpions. I have authority over all the power of the enemy. Nothing shall by any means hurt me.
I thank You that demons are subject to the name of Jesus. I use that name with boldness and confidence. I do not fear the enemy, for greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.
But my greatest joy is not my authority over demons. My greatest joy is that my name is written in heaven. I am secure in Your love. I am safe in Your hands. Nothing can separate me from You.
Let me walk in authority without arrogance. Let me exercise power without pride. Let my joy be rooted in my salvation, not in my accomplishments.
