14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION

This passage reveals the profound purpose of Jesus becoming human. He took on flesh and blood—not merely appearing as a man, but truly partaking of our human nature. Why? So that through His death, He might destroy the devil, who had the power of death.

Notice the word “destroy.” In the Greek, it means to render powerless, to nullify, to bring to nothing. Jesus did not merely defeat Satan; He stripped him of his primary weapon—the fear of death. Before the cross, mankind lived in lifelong bondage to the fear of dying. But because Jesus died and rose again, death has lost its sting (1 Corinthians 15:55).

The passage also reveals Jesus as our merciful and faithful high priest. He was made like us in every way—He suffered, He was tempted—so that He could sympathize with our weaknesses and provide help (succour) in our moments of temptation. He is not a distant, detached Savior. He is one who has been where we are.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, I thank You for sending Jesus to partake of flesh and blood, becoming like me so that He could save me. (Hebrews 2:14)

3. Father, deliver me completely from every fear of death that has held me in bondage. I am free because Christ has conquered the grave. (Hebrews 2:15)

4. Lord, I renounce every spirit of fear—fear of death, fear of sickness, fear of failure, fear of man. These fears no longer have dominion over me. (Hebrews 2:15)

5. Father, thank You that Jesus took not the nature of angels, but the seed of Abraham. He became one of us, my brother and my Savior. (Hebrews 2:16)

6. Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as my merciful and faithful high priest. Thank You for making reconciliation for my sins before the Father. (Hebrews 2:17)

7. Father, because Jesus suffered being tempted, I know He is able to succour (help) me when I am tempted. Send help to me in every moment of trial. (Hebrews 2:18)

8. Lord, when temptation comes, remind me that Jesus has walked this path before me. Give me strength to overcome as He overcame.

9. Father, let me never forget that death is not the end for me. Because Christ died and rose again, I have eternal life. I do not need to fear dying.

10. Lord, make me a witness of this freedom. Let me help others who are still in bondage to the fear of death, pointing them to the risen Savior.

9. I declare that succour (help) is available to me right now. In every trial, God provides a way of escape and strength to bear it.

10. I declare that I am free from the bondage of fear. I walk in the perfect love of God, which casts out all fear.
