The Blessed Hope

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” – Titus 2:13
TEXT: Titus 2:11-15 (KJV)
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
The Christian life is lived between two appearings: the first appearing of Christ, when He came in grace to save us, and the second appearing, when He will come in glory to receive us. The first appearing brought salvation; the second appearing brings hope.
Paul describes the first appearing as “the grace of God that bringeth salvation.” This grace has appeared to all men. It is not limited to a select few; it is available to everyone. Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Grace does not give us a license to sin; it gives us the power to live holy lives.
But grace also gives us something to look forward to: “that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” This is not a vague hope; it is a blessed hope – certain, joyful, and transformative. It is the hope of Christ’s return.
The second appearing is described as “glorious.” The first appearing was humble – a baby in a manger. The second appearing will be glorious – the King of kings returning in power and majesty. The first appearing was marked by suffering; the second appearing will be marked by splendour.
Why did Christ give Himself for us? “That he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Redemption is not just about forgiveness; it is about purification. We are redeemed from sin and purified for good works.
The hope of Christ’s return is not a distraction from holy living; it is a motivation for holy living. Those who truly expect the King will live like citizens of His Kingdom. They will deny ungodliness. They will reject worldly lusts. They will live soberly, righteously, and godly.

COMMENTARY
Introduction: The Two Appearings
The Christian faith is anchored in two appearings of Christ. The first was in humility – His incarnation, His life, His death, His resurrection. The second will be in glory – His return as King, Judge, and Redeemer. The first we remember; the second we await.
The Grace That Teaches
Grace is often misunderstood as a license to sin. But Paul corrects this error. Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts. Grace does not lower the standard of holiness; it empowers us to meet it.
The threefold outcome of grace is:
– Soberly – self-controlled, disciplined, balanced
– Righteously – just, upright, morally sound
– Godly – devout, reverent, living in the fear of God
This is not legalism; it is the fruit of grace. Those who have truly experienced grace will live differently.
The Blessed Hope
The hope of Christ’s return is called “blessed” because it brings joy, comfort, and encouragement. It is not a wish; it is a certainty. It is not a distant dream; it is a present reality that shapes how we live.
The word “hope” in Scripture does not mean uncertainty. It means confident expectation. We do not hope that Christ might return; we know that He will. And that knowledge changes everything.
The Purpose of Redemption
Christ gave Himself for us for two reasons:
1. To redeem us from all iniquity – to purchase our freedom from sin’s bondage
2. To purify unto himself a peculiar people – to make us His own special possession
We are not just saved from something; we are saved to something. We are redeemed from sin and purified for good works. We are a peculiar people – set apart, distinct, different from the world.
The Authority to Speak
Paul instructs Titus to “speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority.” The message of grace and hope is not optional; it is essential. We must speak it boldly, exhort with urgency, and rebuke error with authority.
DECLARATIONS BASED ON THE DEVOTIONAL
I DECLARE that the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to me!
I DECLARE that grace teaches me to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts!
I DECLARE that I live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world!
I DECLARE that I look for that blessed hope – the glorious appearing of my great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ!
I DECLARE that Christ gave Himself for me to redeem me from all iniquity!
I DECLARE that He purified me to be His peculiar people, zealous of good works!
I DECLARE that I am not waiting for an uncertain event; I am expecting a certain hope!
I DECLARE that the hope of Christ’s return motivates me to live holy today!
I DECLARE that I am not ashamed of this hope; I speak it, exhort it, and proclaim it with authority!
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Father, I thank You for the grace that brings salvation. Thank You that this grace has appeared to me and teaches me to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.
Help me to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Let my life be a reflection of Your grace.
I look for that blessed hope – the glorious appearing of my great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Let this hope fill me with joy and motivate me to holiness.
Thank You that Christ gave Himself for me – to redeem me from all iniquity and to purify me as Your own special possession, zealous for good works.
Let me speak these things with boldness, exhort with urgency, and rebuke error with authority.
