Topic: Looking In The Wrong Direction Text: Isaiah 25:1-12 (KJV)
Key Verse: “He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.” (Isaiah 25:8)
The alchemists flourished in Europe during the Middle Ages, with one of their goals being to discover eternal youth and health. In other words, they sought to eliminate death. They were referred to as engaging in “speculative thought” that bore little link to robust scientific research and deep intellectual exercise. Because of this severe lack of a firm footing in staying reality, the alchemists disappeared into history, unable to achieve their objectives. Their fate could not have been otherwise. They did not look in the right direction for eternal life. They ignored the Bible, God’s word that directs man to Christ, the Author of eternal life and Conqueror of death.
In today’s text, Prophet Isaiah expressed praise to God for wonderful interventions of divine providence on behalf of the Jews including the destruction of their enemies. Beyond the temporal blessings enjoyed by the Jews, Isaiah here points to higher blessings under the gospel era in which God will eventually “swallow up death in victory, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.” This is the omnipotent Lord who alone can make us triumph over the challenges threatening to destroy us.
Humanity’s hope in the face of grave global economic depression and frightening developments does not lie in relying more on the philosophies of man, which have brought us to this point in the first place. It lies in resting on the promises of the Creator. He is our Refuge against all who have set themselves up to thwart His good plans for the Church and the faithful followers of His Son. With the word of God in our possession, we are assured of a brighter future than in the Medieval period, when man wanted to outwit death without the salvation plan of God.
Christians can reach out to people and let them know God can offer that eternal life. Amid turmoil, He can also give joy and victory to those who believe in Him and His word.

The message of today’s devotional strikes at the heart of a universal human struggle: the tendency to search for solutions, security, hope, and meaning in the wrong places. Prophet Isaiah’s song of praise in chapter 25 provides a powerful contrast between futile human efforts and the sure victory that comes only from the Lord. This passage is both a triumphant declaration of God’s sovereignty and a sobering warning against misplaced trust.
The Folly of Humanistic Pursuits
Pastor Kumuyi begins with the historical example of the alchemists. These medieval scholars and pseudo-scientists devoted their lives to the quest for the “elixir of life” and the philosopher’s stone — symbols of humanity’s desperate attempt to conquer death and suffering through human wisdom alone. Their failure was not merely technical but spiritual. They looked in the wrong direction. They ignored the revelation of God in Scripture and turned instead to speculation, mysticism, and experimentation devoid of divine truth.
This pattern repeats throughout history. From ancient empires that trusted in military might and fortified cities (as mentioned in Isaiah 25:2) to modern societies that place confidence in science, technology, politics, wealth, or self-help philosophies, humanity repeatedly makes the same mistake. We build “defenced cities” of our own making — impressive systems, ideologies, and institutions — only for them to crumble when tested by reality.
In our contemporary world, this “wrong direction” manifests in many forms:
- Materialism and Wealth: Many believe that enough money, investments, or economic policies will shield them from insecurity and death.
- Human Relationships: Some seek ultimate fulfilment in marriage, family, or social status.
- Science and Technology: Others put their faith in medical breakthroughs, AI, or longevity research as the ultimate saviours.
- Political and Social Systems: Nations and individuals trust in governments, ideologies, or movements to deliver utopia.
All these, like the alchemists, eventually disappoint because they do not address the root problem — sin and separation from God.
God’s Triumphant Promise
Isaiah 25 shifts our gaze to the right direction. The prophet praises God for His faithfulness and wonderful works. He describes God as:
- A strength to the poor and needy.
- A refuge from the storm.
- A shadow from the heat.
Then comes the glorious climax in verse 8 — a prophecy that finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ. The Lord will “swallow up death in victory.” This phrase echoes in the New Testament when Paul declares, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:54-55).
This victory is comprehensive:
- Death is defeated — Not avoided through human effort, but conquered through Christ’s resurrection.
- Tears are wiped away — God Himself comforts every sorrow.
- Reproach is removed — The shame of sin and failure is taken away.
- A glorious feast is prepared — A banquet of fat things for all people on God’s holy mountain (verse 6), pointing to the marriage supper of the Lamb.
The passage also shows God bringing down pride and strongholds (verses 10-12). Every fortress of human arrogance will eventually be laid low in the dust.
Practical Lessons for Believers Today
- Examine Your Sources of Trust Where do you instinctively turn in times of crisis — to people, money, intellect, or to the living God? The devotional challenges us to align our hope with God’s promises rather than worldly systems.
- Proclaim the True Answer Christians are called to be witnesses. In a world filled with fear of economic collapse, pandemics, wars, and personal losses, we have the message that Christ is the answer to humanity’s ultimate questions about life, death, and eternity.
- Live with Eternal Perspective Knowing that God will wipe away all tears and swallow up death should produce resilience, joy, and boldness in the face of present troubles. Our light affliction is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.
- Avoid Spiritual Alchemism In the church today, there can be subtle forms of “looking in the wrong direction” — trusting in formulas, rituals, charismatic leaders, or motivational messages instead of deep, personal relationship with Christ and obedience to His Word.
Broader Biblical Context
Isaiah 25 is part of a larger section of prophecy concerning God’s judgment on the nations and His salvation for His people. It connects beautifully with other scriptures:
- Revelation 7:17 and 21:4 — The fulfilment of God wiping away tears.
- 1 Corinthians 15 — The theological explanation of victory over death through resurrection.
- Psalm 46 — God as refuge and strength.
This prophetic vision is not mere poetry; it is anchored in the character of God who “hath spoken it.” His Word is reliable.
A Call to Action
