BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 JOHN 2: 1- 9

BASIC SCRIPTURE: FRIDAY, 2ND OCTOBER 2026 — 1 JOHN 2:1-9 (KJV)

  1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

  2. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

  3. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

  4. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

  5. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

  6. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

  7. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

  8. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

  9. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — FRIDAY, 2ND OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse: 1 John 2:1 — “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

That Ye Sin Not (Verse 1):

John writes with a pastoral heart. He calls them “my little children.” He writes so that they will not sin. The purpose of his letter is not to condemn. It is not to judge. It is not to criticize. It is to protect. It is to warn. It is to guide. He wants them to live holy lives. He wants them to walk in obedience. He wants them to avoid sin. But he is also realistic. He knows that they will sin. He knows that they will fail. He knows that they will stumble. And so he gives them hope. “If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” We have an advocate. We have a lawyer. We have a defense attorney. We have someone who speaks for us. We have someone who pleads our case. We have someone who represents us. His name is Jesus Christ. He is righteous. He is sinless. He is perfect. He is holy. He is the only one qualified to advocate for us.

The Propitiation (Verse 2):

Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. Propitiation means appeasement. It means satisfaction. It means atonement. It means covering. Jesus satisfied the wrath of God. Jesus paid the penalty for sin. Jesus bore the judgment. Jesus made the sacrifice. His death was sufficient. His blood was enough. His sacrifice was complete. And it was not for our sins only. It was for the sins of the whole world. Jesus died for everyone. His sacrifice is available to all. His salvation is offered to all. His grace is extended to all.

Knowing That We Know Him (Verses 3-4):

How do we know that we know God? How can we be sure? How can we have assurance? John gives the answer. We know that we know Him if we keep His commandments. Obedience is the evidence. Obedience is the proof. Obedience is the fruit. If we keep His commandments, we know Him. If we do not keep His commandments, we do not know Him. He that saith, “I know him,” and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar. He is deceived. He is false. The truth is not in him. Talk is cheap. Words are easy. Confession is not enough. Obedience is required. Obedience is the test. Obedience is the proof.

The Love of God Perfected (Verses 5-6):

But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected. When we keep God’s word, His love is perfected in us. It is complete. It is mature. It is full. It is developed. It is expressed. And hereby know we that we are in him. Obedience gives us assurance. Obedience gives us confidence. Obedience gives us peace. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. If we claim to abide in Christ, we should walk as He walked. We should live as He lived. We should act as He acted. We should love as He loved. We should serve as He served. We should obey as He obeyed.

The Old and New Commandment (Verses 7-8):

John says he writes no new commandment. It is an old commandment. They had it from the beginning. They had heard it. They had received it. They had known it. It was the word of the gospel. It was the message of Christ. It was love. But then he says it is a new commandment. It is new because it is true in Christ. It is new because it is true in them. It is new because the darkness is past. It is new because the true light shines. Love is old. Love is new. Love is eternal. Love is fresh. Love is always relevant. Love is always needed.

Hatred Is Darkness (Verse 9):

He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. This is a strong statement. It is a clear statement. It is a direct statement. You cannot be in the light and hate your brother. You cannot walk with God and hate your neighbor. You cannot claim to know Christ and hate His people. Hatred is darkness. Hatred is blindness. Hatred is deception. Hatred is sin. Love is light. Love is truth. Love is reality. Love is the evidence of salvation.

Question for the Day — Friday, 2nd October 2026:

Do you have an advocate with the Father? Do you know that Jesus is the propitiation for your sins? Do you keep His commandments? Is His love perfected in you? Are you walking as Jesus walked? And do you love your brother?
