A while ago, my wife and I planned a night out for the two of us! We went to a particularly new restaurant with expectations of a wonderful meal together. Waiting for us, just inside the door were two waiters – smartly dressed! Things were looking good for a nice meal and excellent service in a friendly restaurant. At the door, the waiters went on to explain that the restaurant was new and not opened that night. I glanced at all the people sitting at tables, enjoying themselves and eating my native food. I was already salivating, but the ushers told us how that night was just a practice for the staff and kitchen crew before opening for real service in a few days to come. The hard message was: Only people who were friends of employees, and on their list, were being served and were eating that night. I told the ladies that we didn’t mind eating at the restaurant while they practiced! But no, we weren’t in their inner crowd and that meant no food for us. Before we left, they invited us to come back the following week. But your guess is as good as mine; we never returned and in my mild anger, today’s devotional was born! For the most part, churches are just like that – newcomers to churches! Newcomers are hungry and looking for something in their lives and most of the churches they visit have people who are very good at saying, “Hello!” and greeting them. But sadly however, in many churches the welcome and the welcoming stops there! New people quickly find out that even though there are a lot good things happening in the church, it is happening for and being offered to, only those who have an internal connection to the people who are already in the church and the workers keep asking, “Why isn’t our church growing?” Sadly, none of them can see that when new people visit them, they greet them by saying, “Welcome! Go away.” May the Lord use you to break the yoke of cliques in your local church this week by your fruit of LOVE! In this year 2026, show an interest in the new members and help your pastor to show them special love! Peace!
