The Armour of God

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” – Ephesians 6:11
TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-18 (KJV)
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
The Christian life is a warfare. From the moment we are saved, we enter into a battle against forces far greater than any human enemy. Our adversary is not flesh and blood. He is a spiritual being – the devil – and he is powerful, cunning, and relentless.
But God has not left us defenceless. He has provided armour – not ordinary armour, but the armour of God. This armour is not physical; it is spiritual. It is not manufactured in human workshops; it is forged in heaven. And when we put it on, we are equipped to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Paul lists six pieces of armour, each representing a crucial aspect of our spiritual defence:
1. The Belt of Truth – Truth is the foundation. Without truth, the rest of the armour cannot hold. The belt holds everything together. In the same way, truth – knowing God’s Word and living in integrity – is the foundation of our spiritual strength.
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness – The breastplate protects the heart. Righteousness – both the righteousness of Christ imputed to us and the righteous living that flows from it – guards our inner being from the accusations of the enemy.
3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace – Our feet must be shod with the readiness that comes from the gospel. This speaks of stability, preparedness, and the ability to move forward in peace even in the midst of battle.
4. The Shield of Faith – Faith quenches the fiery darts of the wicked. The enemy’s attacks often come as doubts, fears, and lies. Faith is the shield that stops them. It is not our own faith but faith in God and His promises.
5. The Helmet of Salvation – The helmet protects the head – the mind. Salvation is not just a past event; it is a present reality that guards our thoughts. When we know we are saved, we are protected from the enemy’s lies about our identity.
6. The Sword of the Spirit – the Word of God – The sword is the only offensive weapon. It is not just for defence; it is for attack. The Word of God, spoken in faith, defeats the enemy. Jesus used the Word to defeat Satan in the wilderness.
In addition to the armour, Paul adds prayer: “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” Prayer is the atmosphere in which the armour is worn. It is not a separate piece; it is the energy that powers the whole.

COMMENTARY
Introduction: The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
The Christian life is often compared to a battle. The apostle Paul, writing from a Roman prison, uses the imagery of a Roman soldier’s armour to describe the spiritual resources available to believers. This is not a suggestion; it is a command: “Put on the whole armour of God.”
The enemy is real. He is not flesh and blood, but he is a personal being – the devil – who schemes against us. His weapons are not physical but spiritual: deception, accusation, temptation, fear. But God has provided armour that can withstand every attack.
The Six Pieces of Armour
The Belt of Truth
In a Roman soldier’s armour, the belt held everything together. Without it, the other pieces would not stay in place. Truth is the foundation of our spiritual defence. This includes both the truth of God’s Word and the truth of our own integrity. When we live in truth, we are secure.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
The breastplate protected the heart and vital organs. Righteousness – both the righteousness of Christ credited to us and the righteous living that flows from it – guards our inner being. The enemy may accuse us, but we can answer: “I am righteous in Christ.”
The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Roman soldiers wore special sandals that gave them stability and traction. Our stability comes from the gospel of peace. When we are grounded in the good news of what God has done for us, we can stand firm even in the most difficult circumstances.
The Shield of Faith
The shield was used to quench flaming arrows. The enemy’s arrows are often thoughts of doubt, fear, and despair. Faith is the shield that stops them. When we trust God’s promises, the enemy’s lies lose their power.
The Helmet of Salvation
The helmet protects the head – the mind. Salvation is not just a past event; it is a present reality that guards our thoughts. When we know who we are in Christ, we are protected from the enemy’s lies about our identity.
The Sword of the Spirit – the Word of God
The sword is the only offensive weapon. It is not just for defence; it is for attack. Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness by quoting Scripture. The Word of God, spoken in faith, is our weapon against the enemy.
The Role of Prayer
The armour must be worn in an atmosphere of prayer. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” Prayer is not a separate piece of armour; it is the energy that powers the whole. Without prayer, the armour is just metal. With prayer, it is alive.
DECLARATIONS BASED ON THE DEVOTIONAL
I DECLARE that I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might!
I DECLARE that I put on the whole armour of God!
I DECLARE that I stand against the wiles of the devil!
I DECLARE that I wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces – and I am equipped to overcome!
I DECLARE that my loins are girt about with truth!
I DECLARE that I wear the breastplate of righteousness!
I DECLARE that my feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace!
I DECLARE that I take the shield of faith, quenching every fiery dart of the wicked!
I DECLARE that I wear the helmet of salvation!
I DECLARE that I take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God!
I DECLARE that I pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit!
I DECLARE that I am not defenceless – I am fully armed and fully ready!
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Father, I thank You that You have not left me defenceless. You have provided the whole armour of God.
I put on the belt of truth. Let me walk in truth and integrity.
I put on the breastplate of righteousness. Let Your righteousness guard my heart.
I put on the shoes of the gospel of peace. Let me stand firm in the good news of Your salvation.
I take up the shield of faith. Let me quench every fiery dart of the enemy.
I put on the helmet of salvation. Let my mind be guarded by the assurance of my salvation.
I take up the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Let Your Word be my weapon against the enemy.
I pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Let prayer be the atmosphere of my life.
I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. I am fully armed. I am ready to stand.
