11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
MESSAGE
Ancient Israel had no answer to the scourge of certain diseases, especially the disease of leprosy. Medical science offered little help in combating this dreaded condition, which kept its victims away from decent society. There was no relief except by divine intervention.
Jesus told the ten lepers: “Go shew yourselves unto the priests”. This was because after a leper was cleansed of the disease, he was to present himself to a priest to be confirmed clean. Now on their way to the priest, they were cleansed.
Overwhelmed by joy at this discovery, one of them turned back and came to Christ to give glory to God. The rest went away with their healing and forgot the Healer. It is good to note that the one who went back was a Samaritan whose nation the Jews regarded as sinful.
The passage teaches us some profound lessons: One, Jesus remains the source of genuine cleansing and perfect healing. Two, believers are under obligation to return thanks to God for all His benefits and blessings. While one leper was grateful for his healing, the others showed no such appreciation. Their ingratitude pictures how many people often forget all that God bestows upon them both spiritually and physically only to continue to ask for more.
How often do you say: ‘Thank you, Jesus’? As it is in the spiritual, so it is in the physical; we must show appreciation for the good people do unto us. An ungrateful “believer” is a blight to the Christian faith. We need to constantly show appreciation to God for His manifold blessings in our lives! Those who fail to appreciate God’s goodness to them or lightly esteem the displayed love of others are not a true representative of the unique identity of Christ who is praise and gratitude personified.

COMMENTARY
1. The Tragedy of Ingratitude – Out of ten lepers healed, only one returned to give thanks. Jesus noted the absence of the nine. This is a striking picture of how many people receive God’s blessings but fail to acknowledge Him. Ingratitude is not just a lack of manners; it is a spiritual condition that dishonors God and diminishes our own appreciation.
2. The Healer and the Healing – The nine lepers were preoccupied with their healing; the one leper was drawn to the Healer. It is possible to receive God’s blessings without truly knowing and honoring God Himself. The Samaritan’s thanksgiving was not just for the gift but for the Giver. True worship centers on God, not just on what He gives.
3. The Expectation of Gratitude – The devotional reminds us that believers are under obligation to return thanks to God. Thanksgiving is not optional; it is commanded. “In every thing give thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Gratitude is evidence of a heart that recognizes God as the source of all blessings.
4. The Importance of Thanking Others – The devotional extends the principle to human relationships: we must show appreciation for the good others do for us. An ungrateful attitude toward people reflects poorly on our faith. Genuine Christian character includes humility and thankfulness.
