TOPIC: Avoid God’s Anger

DCLM Daily Manna
DCLM Daily Manna

KEY VERSE
“Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger” (1 Kings 15:30).

Bible Reading:
1 Kings 15:25-34 (KJV)

25 And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israel two years.
26 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.
27 And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon.
28 Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him, and reigned in his stead.
29 And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite:
30 Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger.
31 Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
32 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, twenty and four years.
34 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.

MESSAGE

God is described in the Scriptures as the Almighty Creator, loving Father and merciful Redeemer; but He is also described as the All-knowing Judge and a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:23,29). He watches our thoughts, words and actions to see if they conform to His laid-down precepts of righteousness and holy living. And for anyone who chooses to disregard His commandments and warnings, judgment is certain.

In the text, Nadab’s (the son of Jeroboam) reign was exactly like that of his father who made Israel to sin and provoked God to anger with the sins of idolatry, disobedience and forsaking the Lord. God’s judgment came upon him and he was destroyed with every member of his family by Baasha according to the word of the Lord spoken through prophet Ahijah.

Several other instances abound in the Scripture of God’s judgment. The first man and woman were judged by God for their disobedience. Cain was judged for his wickedness. All the people who refused to repent in the time of Noah perished; the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were also judged. Egypt also experienced divine judgment when they refused to release Israel from captivity. Even the children of Israel were not spared when they sinned in the wilderness. If you look closely at each of these cases, you will realise that indeed, “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

God’s judgment is certain. He is plenteous in mercy to those who humble themselves before Him but fearful in judgment to those who despise the manifold riches of His grace. If you choose to be obedient to the warnings of the Lord, repent of your sins and live a consistent Christian life, you will certainly avoid God’s anger and ultimately get to heaven. But if you choose to linger in sin, the consequences will be severe and regrettable.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
A presumptuous attitude towards God is deadly

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
1 Kings 5-7

COMMENTARY

1. The Certainty of Divine Judgment – God is loving and merciful, but He is also a consuming fire. He does not overlook sin or excuse rebellion. Jeroboam and his son Nadab provoked God to anger through idolatry and disobedience. Their judgment was certain and severe. The same applies to us today—God’s judgment is certain.

2. The Ripple Effect of Sin – Jeroboam’s sin did not affect only him; it led an entire nation astray. Nadab followed in his father’s footsteps, and the entire house of Jeroboam was destroyed. Sin is never private. Our choices affect our families, our communities, and future generations.

3. The Patience and Wrath of God – God is plenteous in mercy, but His patience has limits. He gives warnings, He sends prophets, and He waits for repentance. But when people persistently reject His grace, judgment comes. The same God who is merciful is also just.

4. The Call to Repentance – The devotional calls us to repent and live a consistent Christian life. If we obey God’s warnings and turn from sin, we will avoid His anger and inherit eternal life. But if we linger in sin, the consequences will be severe and regrettable.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Fear God – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes the fear of God and the reality of judgment. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that believers must not take God’s grace for granted but must live in reverent obedience. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to flee from sin and avoid God’s anger.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and the fear of God.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to avoid sin and live in obedience to God.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, help me to fear You and to avoid the path of sin. Forgive me for any presumption or disobedience in my life. Give me a repentant heart and a desire to live in obedience to Your Word. May I never provoke You to anger. I choose to live a consistent Christian life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
