Vessels God Uses

DCLM Daily Manna

KEY VERSE
“But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work” (2 Timothy 2:20,21).

Bible Reading:
2 Timothy 2:19-22 (KJV)

19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.
22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

MESSAGE

Robert Murray M’Cheyne, a minister in the Church of Scotland from 1835 to 1843, wrote to Dan Edwards, after the latter’s ordination as a missionary, “In great measure, according to the purity and perfections of the instrument, will be the success. It is not great talents God blesses so much as great likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God”.

In today’s passage, Apostle Paul writes to Timothy, stressing the importance of being a vessel God can use. He starts by reminding Timothy that God’s foundation is solid and that those who belong to God can be recognised by their lives of purity and dedication. Paul uses the metaphor of vessels to illustrate the different types of people in God’s great house. Some are vessels of honour, cleansed and set apart for noble purposes. In contrast, others are vessels of dishonour, unfit for God’s work. The difference between these vessels isn’t about their inherent value but their willingness to be purified and dedicated for God’s use. This analogy emphasises the need for personal purity.

Just as a vessel must be clean to fulfil its purpose, believers must rid themselves of impurities—sinful behaviours, harmful attitudes, or corrupting influences. Doing so makes them valuable to the Master, ready to embrace their divine calling. To become vessels of honour, purified and ready for God’s purposes, believers must abstain from false teachers and corrupting influences, flee youthful desires, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace alongside those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

The metaphor of fleeing suggests urgency and deliberate effort, while the pursuit of righteousness, faith, love, and peace calls for sustained commitment and perseverance.

As we reflect on today’s text, let everyone ask: what kind of vessel am I? Am I a vessel of honour, purified and set apart for noble purposes, or am I a vessel of dishonour, prideful, polluted, and unfit for God’s use? Let us recommit our lives to God, pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace to become vessels worthy of God’s use.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
No vessel is unto honour that is not consecrated

COMMENTARY

1. The Metaphor of Vessels – Paul uses the metaphor of vessels to describe different types of people in God’s house. Some are vessels of gold and silver—honourable and set apart for noble purposes. Others are vessels of wood and earth—dishonourable and unfit for God’s work. The difference is not inherent value but willingness to be purified.

2. The Necessity of Personal Purity – Just as a vessel must be clean to fulfil its purpose, believers must rid themselves of impurities. Sinful behaviours, harmful attitudes, and corrupting influences make us unfit for God’s use. Personal purity is essential for anyone who wants to be used by God.

3. The Call to Flee and Pursue – Paul instructs Timothy to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Fleeing suggests urgency and deliberate effort. Pursuing requires sustained commitment and perseverance. We must actively turn away from sin and actively pursue godliness.

4. The Example of M’Cheyne – Robert Murray M’Cheyne understood that God blesses holiness more than talent. He wrote that “a holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God.” This is a powerful reminder that God values character over charisma. He uses vessels that are pure and consecrated.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Emphasis on Purity – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes personal purity and consecration. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that God uses vessels that are clean and set apart. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to examine themselves and pursue purity.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and personal purity.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to be vessels of honour, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, make me a vessel of honour, sanctified and meet for Your use. Cleanse me from every impurity and corrupting influence. Help me to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. May my life be consecrated to You. Use me for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
