A Living Sacrifice

DCLM Daily Manna
DCLM Daily Manna

KEY VERSE
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

Bible Reading:
Romans 12:1-8 (KJV)

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

MESSAGE

The idea of sacrifice connotes total surrender and complete abandonment of one’s will. It is to die to self, to live at the disposal of other people. For believers, the expectation is no less higher. Their lives are not just to be taken as offering to God, but an experience that expresses a flourishing relationship with God, and absolute loyalty and dedication to Jesus Christ. This was the requirement outlined by Apostle Paul in his epistle to Christians in Rome.

Among numerous examples in the scriptures and contemporary times, Paul epitomized the selfless and sacrificial living revealed in his admonition to the early Church, He said: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me”. It takes crucifixion to offer oneself as a living sacrifice, able to provide holy and acceptable service to God. Despite Apostle Paul’s academic and professional attainments, apostolic gifts and prowess, he was humble, humane, hospitable, amiable and self sacrificing. He consecrated all and counted them as nothing in order that he might win Christ and be a blessing to the church and generations after him.

This is what is expected of all believers today. The proof that Christ lives in us is that we live for Him and are willing to spend and be spent to advance His course on earth. Only the living can be a living sacrifice. The dead have nothing to offer to the living. The religious, unconverted individuals are dead and cannot provide an acceptable service to God. They live in sin and only for the gratification of fleshly desires.

Many pilgrims shrink when they hear about living sacrifice, crucifixion, consecration, absolute surrender and submission to God in all things. Yet, it is the life we are called to live. Our daily living must reflect God’s glory. Our body, time, talents, gifts, privileges and opportunities must be considered gifts for which we are accountable. Therefore, they must be used to honour Him and bless our world. It is our reasonable service when we offer services to God from holy hearts that honour and exalt His name.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Only the living can be a living sacrifice

COMMENTARY

1. The Meaning of a Living Sacrifice – A living sacrifice is a life completely surrendered to God. Unlike the Old Testament sacrifices that were killed, the believer’s sacrifice is living—active, daily, and ongoing. It means dying to self and living for Christ. This is the reasonable service that God expects from every believer.

2. The Example of Apostle Paul – Paul embodied the life of a living sacrifice. Despite his academic achievements and apostolic gifts, he counted all things as loss for the sake of Christ. He was humble, selfless, and willing to spend and be spent for the gospel. His life challenges us to examine our own level of surrender.

3. The Proof of Christ Living in Us – The evidence that Christ lives in us is that we live for Him. We are willing to surrender our bodies, time, talents, and resources to advance His kingdom. Only the living—those who are spiritually alive in Christ—can offer this sacrifice. The unconverted cannot please God.

4. The Call to Total Consecration – Many believers shrink from the call to living sacrifice, crucifixion, and absolute surrender. Yet this is the life we are called to live. Our daily living must reflect God’s glory. Everything we have is a gift from God, and we are accountable for how we use it.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Emphasis on Consecration – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes total consecration and surrender to God. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that believers must present their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to offer their lives completely to the Lord.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and total consecration to God.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to present their bodies as living sacrifices.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, I present my body as a living sacrifice to You. Help me to die to self and live for You. Teach me to surrender my time, talents, and resources to advance Your kingdom. May my life be holy and acceptable to You. I want to be a living sacrifice, fully consecrated to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
