TOPIC: God’s Witnesses

KEY VERSE
“Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice” (Micah 6:1).
Bible Reading:
Micah 6:1-5 (KJV)
1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.
2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’s controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.
4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.
Hard, rocky mountains and cliffs are two of the common physical features of Palestine. Sound experts tell us that these objects are among some of the most effective natural producers of sound echoes. If tested at a quiet moment, a whisper within appropriate distance of a flat, hard wall of a cliff may be heard nearly 40 metres away. It is as though, the speaker was talking from just over your shoulder. A shout near a range of such mountains produces a repeating echo that can sometimes be heard more than 7 times before it becomes inaudible.
The Lord had summoned Israel to appear before some of these mountains and tell the reason for their unfaithfulness to Him who had done so much in revealing His goodness and mercy to them. God intends to judge the sins and ingratitude of Israel with the surrounding mountains and hills as witnesses. The mountains and hills have been of old and have kept their own estates, not moving or removing from the place where God had planted them. They have sent out echoes of sound as they received them, and have been witnesses of the nation’s idolatry and wickedness. God’s displeasure against Israel is justified in view of the faithfulness of the mountains and hills in remaining in their God-given places.
There is no want of evidence or witness, which God might call up against man’s sin and unfaithfulness to Him, at any time. Man cannot cover up his sin well enough out of sight to escape the notice of either the sun, moon, stars, mountains or hills. The secret sins of all men will be judged openly by the Lord on judgment day.
If man refuses to see God’s kindness in every situation of his life, if he begins to take God’s goodness for granted and goes away from His will and commandment, God can use even those things that are meant for man’s blessing and satisfaction as rods of punishment and witnesses against man. Confession, repentance and absolute faith in Christ are necessary for a guilt-free conscience. It is rewarding to proclaim God’s word and give witness of Christ everywhere as the end draws closer.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Be a witness and be a proclaimer of the gospel everywhere

COMMENTARY
1. Creation as God’s Witness – God called the mountains and hills as witnesses against Israel. Creation itself testifies to God’s existence, power, and righteousness. The mountains have remained faithful to their God-given places, while Israel had strayed from God’s commandments. Creation bears witness to our faithfulness or unfaithfulness.
2. The Ingratitude of Israel – God reminded Israel of all He had done for them—delivering them from Egypt, sending Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, and protecting them from Balak and Balaam. Yet they had grown ungrateful and rebellious. Ingratitude is a dangerous sin that leads to spiritual decline.
3. The Impossibility of Hiding Sin – No sin is hidden from God. The mountains, hills, sun, moon, and stars all witness against human sin. Secret sins will be judged openly on the day of judgment. We cannot escape God’s notice or His judgment.
4. The Call to Repentance – The devotional calls us to confession, repentance, and faith in Christ. Only these can cleanse our conscience and free us from guilt. We must not take God’s goodness for granted or stray from His will.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Witness – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes the importance of bearing witness for Christ. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that believers must proclaim the gospel everywhere. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to be witnesses and proclaimers of the gospel as the end draws near.
About DCLM and Daily Manna
The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and witnessing for Christ.
DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to be witnesses of Christ and to proclaim His gospel everywhere.
Prayer Reflection
Lord, help me to be a faithful witness for You. Forgive me for any ingratitude or unfaithfulness. Remind me that no sin is hidden from You. Cleanse my conscience through confession and repentance. Use me to proclaim Your gospel everywhere as the end draws near. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
