BASIC SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 12:1-8

BASIC SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 12:1-8 (KJV)

1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

3. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

4. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

5. So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

6. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

7. Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;

8. Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, by Your mercies, I present my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto You. Let this be my reasonable service.

2. Lord, do not let me be conformed to this world. Transform me by the renewing of my mind.

3. Father, let me prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God in my life.

4. Lord, help me not to think of myself more highly than I ought to think. Let me think soberly according to the measure of faith You have given me.

5. Father, let me understand my place in the body of Christ. Let me not envy others but use my gift for the building up of the body.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Romans 12:1 — “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

The Mercies of God (Verse 1):

Paul begins with an appeal. He beseeches them by the mercies of God. He does not command them. He urges them. He pleads with them. The mercies of God are the motivation. God has been merciful. He has saved them. He has called them. He has justified them. He has sanctified them. He has given them His Spirit. He has given them eternal life. He has given them His promises. He has been merciful. And because of His mercies, they are to respond.

Present Your Bodies (Verse 1):

The response is to present your bodies. Not just your hearts. Not just your minds. Not just your spirits. Your bodies. Your physical bodies. Your hands. Your feet. Your eyes. Your ears. Your mouths. Your tongues. Your whole being. Present them as a living sacrifice. In the Old Testament, animals were sacrificed. They were killed. They were offered. They were consumed. But the believer is to be a living sacrifice. Alive. Active. Serving. Worshipping. Holy. Acceptable. This is reasonable service. This is spiritual worship. This is the logical response to God’s mercy.

Be Not Conformed (Verse 2):

The world has a pattern. It has a mold. It has a shape. It tries to squeeze you into its shape. It tries to conform you. It tries to make you like it. It tries to make you think like it. It tries to make you act like it. It tries to make you talk like it. It tries to make you want what it wants. It tries to make you live like it. But Paul says, do not be conformed to this world. Do not let the world squeeze you into its mold. Do not let the world dictate your thinking. Do not let the world dictate your values. Do not let the world dictate your behaviour. Be transformed. Be changed. Be renewed.

Renewing of Your Mind (Verse 2):

Transformation happens through the renewing of the mind. The mind is the battlefield. The mind is where the battle is won or lost. The mind must be renewed. It must be changed. It must be reprogrammed. It must be saturated with truth. It must be filled with the Word. It must be shaped by the Spirit. It must be transformed. Then you can prove what is the will of God. You can discover it. You can experience it. You can live it. His will is good. His will is acceptable. His will is perfect.

Think Soberly (Verse 3):

Paul gives a warning. Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought to think. Pride is a danger. Pride is a trap. Pride is a snare. Pride destroys. Pride blinds. Pride deceives. Paul says, think soberly. Think realistically. Think humbly. Evaluate yourself with sound judgment. According to the measure of faith God has given you. Faith is a gift. It is not a reason to boast. It is a reason to serve.

One Body, Many Members (Verses 4-5):

The church is a body. It has many members. Each member has a different function. Each member has a different gift. Each member has a different role. But all members are part of one body. We are one in Christ. We are members one of another. We are connected. We are interdependent. We are united. We are not independent. We are not isolated. We are not self-sufficient. We need each other. We serve each other. We build each other up.

Gifts Differing (Verses 6-8):

God has given different gifts. Prophecy. Ministry. Teaching. Exhortation. Giving. Ruling. Showing mercy. These are gifts of grace. They are not earned. They are given. They are to be used. They are to be used according to the grace given. Prophecy — speak forth God’s word. Ministry — serve and care. Teaching — instruct and explain. Exhortation — encourage and urge. Giving — give generously and simply. Ruling — lead with diligence. Showing mercy — do it with cheerfulness. Use your gift. Use it for the body. Use it for the glory of God.

Have you presented your body as a living sacrifice? Are you being transformed by the renewing of your mind? Do you think soberly about yourself? Are you using your gift to serve the body of Christ?
