Exodus 8:16-19 (KJV)
16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
17 And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
18 And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.
19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.
Psalm 8:1-9 (KJV)
1 O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURES
Exodus 8:16-19 – The Finger of God
This passage records the third plague that God brought upon Egypt—the plague of lice. It is a short but significant account that demonstrates the limits of human power and the supremacy of divine authority.
The Context of Judgment
Pharaoh had repeatedly refused to let Israel go. God had already sent plagues of blood and frogs. Now, without warning, Aaron stretched out his rod and struck the dust, and the dust became lice throughout the land of Egypt.
The Limits of Magic
The magicians of Egypt had been able to replicate the first two plagues through their secret arts. But when it came to the plague of lice, they could not. Their enchantments failed. The power of darkness has its limits; it can imitate but it cannot create. It can counterfeit but it cannot overcome the true power of God.
The Confession of the Magicians
For the first time, the magicians acknowledged a power greater than their own: “This is the finger of God.” Even the servants of darkness were forced to confess that the plague came from a source beyond their control.
The Hardened Heart
Despite this confession, Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened. He refused to listen, even when his own magicians admitted divine intervention. This is a warning: evidence alone does not produce faith; only a heart opened to God can receive truth.
Psalm 8 – The Majesty of God and the Dignity of Man
Psalm 8 is a meditation on the greatness of God and the unique place of humanity in creation. It moves from the vastness of the heavens to the humble role of man, and from man’s lowliness to his exalted status.
The Excellence of God’s Name (verse 1)
“O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” The psalmist begins and ends with praise. God’s name—His character, His reputation—is excellent, majestic, worthy of praise across the whole earth.
Strength from the Weak (verse 2)
“Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength.” God uses the weakest instruments to silence His enemies. What the world despises, God exalts. What seems powerless becomes the vehicle of His power.
The Heavens Declare His Glory (verse 3)
The psalmist looks up at the night sky—the moon, the stars, the work of God’s fingers—and is overwhelmed by the vastness of creation. In light of such majesty, he asks a profound question.
The Question (verse 4)
“What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” In the face of the infinite universe, humanity seems insignificant. Yet God is mindful of us. He remembers us. He visits us. This is not a statement of despair but of wonder.
The Answer (verses 5-8)
God has crowned man with glory and honour. Though made “a little lower than the angels,” man has been given dominion over the works of God’s hands. All things—sheep and oxen, beasts of the field, birds of the air, fish of the sea—are under his feet.
This echoes the original mandate of Genesis 1:28: to have dominion, to subdue, to rule. Humanity is not an accident; it is a creation crowned with purpose and authority.
The Return to Praise (verse 9)
The psalm ends where it began: “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” The contemplation of God’s greatness leads to worship. The recognition of man’s dignity leads to gratitude.
PART THREE: KEY THEMES FOR PRAYER
1. The Finger of God
The magicians recognized that the plague of lice was “the finger of God.” This phrase reminds us that God’s power is not only for judgment but also for deliverance. What is impossible for human effort is possible for God.
2. The Limits of Darkness
The magicians could imitate but they could not overcome. Satan may counterfeit God’s works, but he cannot ultimately prevail. The finger of God reveals the limits of the enemy.
3. The Majesty of God
Psalm 8 calls us to awe. In a world that often reduces God to manageable proportions, we are reminded that His name is excellent in all the earth, and His glory is above the heavens.
4. The Dignity of Humanity
We are not insignificant. God has crowned us with glory and honour. We have been given dominion. This is not a license for arrogance but a call to responsible stewardship.
5. Strength from Weakness
God uses the weak to silence the strong. What the world counts as foolishness, God uses to confound the wise. Our weaknesses are not obstacles to His power; they are opportunities for His glory.
