DCLM Daily Manna
DCLM Daily Manna

KEY VERSE
“And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither tonight of the children of Israel to search out the country” (Joshua 2:2).

Bible Reading:
Joshua 2:1-7 (KJV)

1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither tonight of the children of Israel to search out the country.
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

MESSAGE

In his autobiography published in Moscow in 1967, the disgraced former British spy Kim Philby told the story of his life as a double agent for both the British Spy agency M16 and the Soviet KGB. The book recounts how he passed crucial information to the Soviets, compromising Western operations during the Cold War. It provides Philby’s own narrative of his motivations, actions and mind-set as a long-term mole until his cover was blown and he escaped to Moscow where he eventually died. Spies live a dangerous life and can put the security of nations and people at risk.

As the new leader for the nation of Israel, Joshua wanted first-hand information about the security and other social conditions in Jericho before launching his attack. For this, he sent two unnamed men to “go view the land”. The men went, but unfortunately, their cover was blown almost as soon as they entered the city. They hid in Rahab’s house and she, amazingly, cooperated with their covert operations by misdirecting the emissaries of the king of Jericho when they came to her.

The book of Hebrews commended Rahab for her faith in the God of the spies. “By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace” (Hebrews 11:31). The spies apparently entered Jericho in the evening and not long after, the men of Jericho rightly located where they were. Rahab chose to cast her lot with the two spies and rescue them. This act of faith turned Rahab the harlot to Rahab the forgiven, who became one of the heroines of faith in the Bible.

Each day, we have opportunities to relate with people by faith. You can, like Rahab, believe God’s messengers, even when all the prognosis show them as underdogs. You should not ignore the saints and pitch your tent with the king of Jericho because he has the trappings of power on his side. Your choice matters because you are dealing with God’s secret agents who may determine your destiny. Be intentional in pitching your tent on God’s side.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
No one can ever perish trusting the Lord

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Genesis 38-40

COMMENTARY

1. Rahab’s Defining Choice – Rahab faced a critical decision: side with the king of Jericho who had visible power, or side with the God of Israel whose people appeared as underdogs. She chose to believe the spies’ report and cast her lot with Israel. This single act of faith transformed her identity—from harlot to heroine, from outsider to ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Her story proves that one decision of faith can rewrite your entire destiny.

2. Faith That Acts – Rahab’s faith was not passive. She hid the spies, misdirected the king’s men, and risked her own life to protect them. The devotional reminds us that true faith produces action. Believing God’s messengers means actively supporting and protecting them, even when it is costly. As James writes, “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:26).

3. Believing the Underdog – The devotional challenges us to believe God’s messengers even when all “prognosis show them as underdogs.” The king of Jericho had armies, walls, and earthly power. Israel had nothing but God’s promise. Yet Rahab saw beyond the natural and recognized the supernatural. This is the essence of faith—trusting God’s word regardless of circumstances.

4. Opportunities for Faith – Each day presents opportunities to relate with people by faith. The devotional asks: Will you believe God’s messengers or side with those who oppose them? Your choice matters because “you are dealing with God’s secret agents who may determine your destiny.” The people God sends into our lives—pastors, teachers, fellow believers—carry divine messages. How we receive them can shape our future.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Faith – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes that faith is the foundation of the Christian life. DCLM’s teachings consistently call believers to trust God’s Word and His servants, even when circumstances seem contrary. The Daily Manna devotional encourages readers to examine how they receive God’s messengers and to choose faith over fear.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, faith, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to live by faith and trust God’s promises.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, give me the faith of Rahab to believe Your messengers and trust Your promises, even when the odds seem against me. Help me to see beyond natural circumstances and recognize Your hand at work. I choose to pitch my tent on Your side today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
