18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.
19 Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’s servant?
20 Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.
21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.
22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.
23 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

MESSAGE
It was the author J.C. Ryle in his book, Practical Religion who says, “Beware of manufacturing a God of your own: a God who is all mercy, but not just; a God who is all love, but not holy; a God who has a heaven for everybody, but a hell for none;… such a God is an idol of your own creation. He is not God of the Bible, and aside from the God of the Bible, there is no God at all.” In today’s Bible passage, Prophet Isaiah furthered the prophecy concerning the Messiah’s kingdom typified by that of Cyrus. It hints at the great success of the gospel and the Church, the defeat of the enemies of the Church and the rejection of the unbelieving and Christ-rejecting Jews. The prophecy particularly points out how those who subscribe to idle worship in the face of all these would be ashamed of their stance.
A call is here given to the spiritually blind and deaf Israel, and by extension professing believers and ministers: “Hear ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see”. Those who would remain obstinate and unbelieving would be allowed to suffer the consequences of their sin. This was the case of Israel who violated God’s law and remained misguided even under the correcting rod of God.
Sin has consequence and idolatrous sins have weightier and more lethal consequences. Idolatry is a flagrant affront against the deity of God. He who goes awhoring after any tin god belittles the Almighty as secondary to that which he enthrones in his heart. This act attracts the hot displeasure of God.
If your personality, pursuit, power or possession becomes the primary attraction that distracts you from God, you are digging an abysmal pit for yourself. He who desires to shake off God’s wrath should humbly submit his heart to the Lord. Let God be the sole administrator sitting on the throne of your heart. Only then will you savour the blessings of Christ’s kingdom.

COMMENTARY
1. The Nature of Idolatry – Idolatry is not limited to bowing before physical statues. As J.C. Ryle warned, it includes manufacturing a God of our own imagination—one who fits our preferences rather than the God of Scripture. Any concept of God that diminishes His holiness, justice, or wrath is an idol. The true God is all-merciful AND all-just; all-loving AND all-holy. To worship any other is idolatry.
2. The Shame of Idolaters – The key verse declares that those who trust in graven images “shall be turned back” and “greatly ashamed.” Idolatry ultimately leads to disappointment and disgrace. Idols cannot save, answer, or deliver. Those who place their trust in anything other than the living God will find themselves empty-handed and humiliated.
3. Spiritual Blindness and Deafness – Isaiah calls out to the spiritually blind and deaf. Israel had eyes but could not see; ears but could not hear. This is the tragedy of sin—it dulls spiritual perception. Even under God’s corrective rod, they remained obstinate. This warns believers today: sin hardens the heart and blinds us to God’s truth. We must continually ask God to open our eyes (Psalm 119:18).
4. The Consequences of Sin – The devotional reminds us that sin has consequences, and idolatry carries weightier judgment. Israel was “robbed and spoiled,” “snared in holes,” and “hid in prison houses” because they forsook God. God allowed their enemies to overpower them as a judgment for their disobedience. This is not harshness but justice. God will not tolerate rivals to His throne.
5. The Call to Repentance – The message ends with a call to humbly submit our hearts to the Lord. If anything—personality, pursuit, power, or possession—becomes the primary attraction distracting us from God, we are digging a pit for ourselves. True blessing comes only when God sits on the throne of our hearts. As Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
6. Prayer Reflection
Lord, search my heart and reveal every idol I have allowed to take Your place. Forgive me for the times I have put anything before You. Help me to tear down every false image and submit fully to Your lordship. Open my eyes to see Your truth and my ears to hear Your voice. May You alone sit on the throne of my heart. In Jesus’ name.
