KEY VERSE
“But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it” (Deuteronomy 30:14).

11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
MESSAGE
The acclaimed writer, Robert R. Updegraff in his book, Obvious Adams: The Story Of A Successful Business Man, tells the story of Adams, a young man who rises to success in the business world through his ability to see and act on the obvious. Adams has a talent for spotting simple solutions that others overlook. The book reminds us that the most effective solutions are often the simplest, and that by focusing on the fundamentals, we can uncover answers that were hidden in plain sight.
In his last book and as part of his last address to the children of Israel, Moses reminds them of the availability of the word of God as a guide and a set of instructions to practice and live by. God had used Moses to bring the Word to the people through the physical writing of the Ten Commandments on tables of stone. The written Word (Genesis to Deuteronomy) was available for them at that time; they also had access to other compilations of the laws by the scribes as revealed by God to Moses. Everything they needed to know and do to please God had been revealed through Moses, and he had faithfully codified them.
Moses took time to refute the idea that the people needed extra revelation to obey and please God. God’s instructions and commandments were comprehensive enough. The instructions were clear and every effort by people to trifle with the word or “search” for it across the sea was unnecessary. The word was near, in their mouth to be spoken and confessed and to be obeyed. He had instructed them earlier, “these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart” (Deuteronomy 6:6). They were to write the words and “…bind them for a sign upon their hand, and they shall be as frontlets between their eyes” (Deuteronomy 6:8).
Today, the word of God is not just available but also near you. You have it in printed form and it is available in electronic format. Whatever medium you may choose, the Word is near to guide and help you to walk in obedience to the instructions of your heavenly Father. Read the Word today and be blessed.

COMMENTARY
1. The Word Is Accessible – Moses emphasized that God’s commandments were not hidden, distant, or impossible to obtain. The people did not need to ascend to heaven or cross the sea to find God’s will. It was already given, clear, and near. This refutes any excuse that God’s will is unclear or unattainable. Today, believers have unprecedented access to Scripture through print, audio, and digital platforms. The Word is truly “nigh” to us.
2. The Word Must Be in the Heart – Moses instructed that God’s words “shall be in thine heart” (Deuteronomy 6:6). Having the Word externally—on tablets, scrolls, or smartphones—is not enough. It must be internalized, meditated upon, and treasured in the heart. As the devotional states, “Having but not acting on the Word is doubly damning.” Knowledge without obedience brings greater judgment.
3. The Word Is Meant to Be Spoken – The devotional notes that the Word was “in their mouth to be spoken and confessed.” Confession of God’s Word is an act of faith. Romans 10:8 echoes this: “The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach.” Speaking Scripture aligns our words with God’s truth and builds our faith.
4. The Danger of Excuses – Moses preemptively addressed the excuses Israel might make: “It is not in heaven… neither is it beyond the sea.” This is a warning against claiming ignorance or impossibility. The Word is accessible; the only question is whether we will obey it. We often look for new revelation or extraordinary signs while neglecting the clear commands already given.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, thank You for making Your Word so accessible to me. Forgive me for the times I have had the Word but failed to act on it. Help me to hide Your Word in my heart, confess it with my mouth, and walk in obedience to Your commands. May Your Word transform my life today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
