KEY VERSE
“But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall” (Malachi 4:2).

1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.
4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
MESSAGE
Martin Luther King, Jr said, “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends towards Justice.” Take it or leave it, there is a payday for all. Justice will catch up with everyone for their actions. It may be delayed in the sight of men, but God will recompense all with equity in His own time. Let the irreverent sinner beware.
Israel is also admonished in the text to remember the Law of Moses. The passage also highlights God’s promise to send Elijah before the dreadful day of the Lord. John the Baptist was sent to herald the first advent of Christ. He announced the coming of the Son of God as the Lamb that was sent to take away the sin of the world. Israel heard but did not take heed to the words of John. What they heard did not profit them because it was not mixed with faith. They eventually suffered untold woes because of their impenitence.
This prophecy has an extended meaning for the Gentile nations. The climactic point of the great tribulation will witness again the ministry of Elijah and another witness. Yet Israel and the Gentile world will not heed the fiery messages of the two witnesses. God’s word will, however, be fulfilled regardless of the unbelief of the godless. And He will dispense His judgment justly.
Moses is not here today, but the compassionate God has sent His Son Jesus Christ to us. This is the era of unfathomable grace. The wise will heed Christ’s word and bend his will in reverence to the Lord’s call. Embrace the outstretched arms of God’s Son inviting you today to the paradise of peace. Don’t tarry in unbelief. The Sun of righteousness will come again, no longer as God’s Lamb but as the fiery Lion of the tribe of Judah. He will judge the unrighteous and reward the righteous.

COMMENTARY
1. The Certainty of Judgment – The day is coming when the proud and the wicked will be burned like stubble. God’s justice is certain, even if delayed. He will recompense everyone according to their deeds. No one will escape His judgment.
2. The Sun of Righteousness – For those who fear God’s name, the Sun of righteousness will arise with healing in His wings. This is a beautiful picture of Christ, who brings healing and restoration to those who trust in Him. He is the light that dispels darkness and brings hope.
3. The Ministry of Elijah – God promised to send Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. This was fulfilled in John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Christ’s first coming. It will be fulfilled again in the last days. Those who heed the warning will be saved.
4. The Era of Grace – We live in an era of unfathomable grace. God has sent His Son Jesus Christ to us. The wise will heed His word and turn to Him in repentance. Today is the day of salvation; tomorrow may be too late.
