LESSONS FROM A DOOMED CITY
Text: Isaiah 23:1-18 (KJV)

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.” (Isaiah 23:15)

Throughout human history, civilisations have risen and fallen due to war, epidemics, or natural disasters. This cycle of creation and destruction shapes the destiny of all, whether living or not. An example of a doomed city is Craco, Italy which was evacuated in 1963 due to safety concerns. Once a bustling city, it now lies in ruins and serves as a backdrop for movies and tourism. This illustrates the delicate balance between growth and decline in the course of history.
Tyre was what historians call a city-state. Technically, it was a big city. However, they were independent in that they relied upon their own military for protection and their own resources for maintenance and sustenance, as explained in our text. God’s dealings with them serve as a reminder that He, the Ruler of the universe, is the Sovereign of all nations. If a nation persists in defying God despite repeated warnings, He has the power and will to bring it down. Throughout the 18 verses that presented this city’s regrettable postmortem, there is nothing good to write about it. It was described as a harlot whose iniquities overshadowed its otherwise beautiful scenery. Concerning its end, Isaiah prophesied that the city’s joy would be cut short.
Looking at our modern cities today, we see a sad parallel to the situation in Tyre. Our civilisation and progress have brought a feeling of self-reliance and independence from God. The moral and spiritual decline in our society is all too apparent…

Expanded Commentary: Powerful Lessons for Our Generation
Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, in today’s Daily Manna, draws our attention to the sobering fate of the ancient city of Tyre — a wealthy, self-sufficient commercial powerhouse that was reduced to ruins because of pride, immorality, and rebellion against God.
Tyre’s story is not just ancient history. It is a mirror held up to our modern world. Many nations and cities today boast of technological advancement, economic strength, and military might, yet they have turned their backs on the God who gives them breath. Like Tyre, they have become spiritual harlots — chasing wealth, pleasure, and self-glory while rejecting the Creator.
Key Lessons from a Doomed City:
- No Nation or City is Self-Sufficient Tyre trusted in its wealth, navy, and trade routes. But when God pronounced judgment, none of these could save it. True security is found only in God, not in human achievements.
- Persistent Sin Invites Divine Judgment God is merciful and slow to anger, but when a people or nation continues in deliberate rebellion, judgment eventually comes. Tyre was forgotten for 70 years — a long period of desolation.
- Moral Decay Precedes National Collapse The devotional highlights the sad parallels in our time: abortion, sexual immorality, pornography, breakdown of family values, violence, and drug abuse. These are not “personal choices” — they are signs of a society walking the same path as Tyre.
- Self-Reliance Leads to Self-Destruction The Thought for the Day is powerful: “Those who turn their backs on God’s word self-destruct.” This is both a warning and an invitation to return to the Lord.
This devotional calls every believer to two urgent actions:
- Personal Repentance — Examine your own life. Are there areas where you have become self-reliant or compromised with sin?
- Intercession for Nations — We must pray for a mighty spiritual revival across the nations before it is too late.

While cities and nations may face judgment, those who align their belief system with God’s Word and labour in prayer and holiness will experience deliverance and exemption.
Prayer Point: Lord, have mercy on our nation and the nations of the world. Turn our hearts back to You. Raise a standard of righteousness in the midst of moral decay. Help me to live as a light and not conform to the pattern of this world, in Jesus’ name.
