Original Devotional Excerpt
Hurricane Irma hit Puerto Rico on September 6, 2017, as a Category 5 storm, causing widespread devastation. The then-governor imposed a curfew, resulting in the closure of drinking bars during the storm. Despite the temporary halt in nightlife, as soon as the curfew was lifted, people rushed back to bars like La Placita to resume their regular activities. The storm disrupted the city’s usual loud music and night parties, but the community quickly returned to their socializing and revelry once the danger had passed.
When God judges, there is no wine, singing, or celebration. There are no songs and cheer and no parties. The earth will mourn and groan in pain for the severity of God’s wrath poured on it. Prophet Isaiah paints a picture of this in today’s passage. The city is in ruins; the gates, typically closed to protect the city, are now battered. Nothing is left when the olive tree is beaten, and the city is made desolate. The voices of the bride and groom are stunningly silent. The nation’s natural scenery is devastated. We see how God will empty the earth, implying that the earth is full. The hand of God will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. This is similar to what happened with Noah, the flood, and the ark.
God will judge everyone regardless of their status. Material wealth won’t matter in the end. Our foundations might be wrong, needing a change…
It is time to pray to God to have mercy, backed up by a corresponding lifestyle of repentance and humility.

Expanded Commentary: A Sobering Call to Repentance in a Joyful Generation
In today’s Daily Manna, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi delivers a powerful and timely warning. While the world continues in carefree celebration, God is sounding an alarm: a day is coming when celebration will cease.
The prophet Isaiah describes a future time of divine judgment where the earth itself mourns, the proud are brought low, and all human merriment falls silent. Joyful sounds — weddings, songs, parties, and commerce — will be replaced by desolation. This is not just poetic language; it is a graphic picture of what happens when a sinful world finally reaps the full harvest of its rebellion.
The example of Hurricane Irma in Puerto Rico is striking. People paused their revelry only while the storm raged, but quickly resumed once it passed. Many in our generation are doing the same — ignoring the clear signs of God’s displeasure (natural disasters, moral decay, global unrest) and rushing back to pleasure, materialism, and self-indulgence.

- Judgment Silences False Joy When God’s hand of judgment falls, no amount of wealth, status, or military power can stop it. The “haughty people of the earth” will languish.
- The Earth Itself Testifies Climate crises, disasters, and environmental distress are not just natural occurrences — they are signs that creation is groaning under the weight of sin (Romans 8:22).
- Repentance, Not Religion, is the Answer God is not looking for empty rituals. He desires genuine repentance and a humble return to His ways. Only then can mercy triumph over judgment.
- There is Still Time Unlike the final judgment, we are still in the season of grace. The call is urgent: turn from sin, seek God, and live holy while there is opportunity.
This message connects deeply with the current emphasis in the Body of Christ on spiritual warfare, renewing the mind, and enforcing victory in Christ. While we labour in prayer, worship, and commanding the day, we must also maintain a posture of holiness and repentance. A wrong belief system that normalizes sin and carefree living will hinder the full manifestation of God’s power in our lives.
Prayer Point: Lord, have mercy on me, my family, my nation, and the nations of the world. Deliver us from the spirit of careless celebration in the face of judgment. Grant us genuine repentance and help us to live soberly and righteously as we await Your return, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
