BASIC SCRIPTURE: EXODUS 4:1-17

BASIC SCRIPTURE: SUNDAY, 25TH OCTOBER 2026 — EXODUS 4:1-17 (KJV)

  1. And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee.

  2. And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.

  3. And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.

  4. And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:

  5. That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

  6. And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.

  7. And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.

  8. And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

  9. And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

  10. And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

  11. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?

  12. Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

  13. And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.

  14. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.

  15. And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.

  16. And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.

  17. And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — SUNDAY, 25TH OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse: Exodus 4:2 — “And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.”

Moses’ Excuses (Exodus 4:1):

Moses had been called by God. He had seen the burning bush. He had heard the voice of the Lord. He had received his commission. He was to go to Pharaoh. He was to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. But Moses did not want to go. He was afraid. He was insecure. He was full of doubt. And so he made excuses. His first excuse was in the previous chapter: “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh?” God answered, “Certainly I will be with thee.” His second excuse was, “They will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice.” And God began to give him signs. The rod. The leprous hand. The water turned to blood. Each sign was a demonstration of God’s power. Each sign was an answer to Moses’ doubt. Each sign was a reassurance of God’s presence.

What Is That in Thine Hand? (Exodus 4:2):

God asked Moses a simple question. “What is that in thine hand?” Moses answered, “A rod.” It was a shepherd’s rod. It was a common rod. It was an ordinary rod. It was the rod he used to guide sheep. It was the rod he used to protect the flock. It was the rod he used to walk. It was the rod he used to lean on. It was nothing special. It was nothing remarkable. It was nothing extraordinary. But God was about to use it. God was about to transform it. God was about to turn it into a instrument of power. God was about to use the ordinary to do the extraordinary. God was about to use the natural to accomplish the supernatural.

The Rod Becomes a Serpent (Exodus 4:3-5):

God told Moses to cast the rod on the ground. Moses obeyed. The rod became a serpent. Moses fled from it. He was afraid. He was terrified. He ran. But God told him to take it by the tail. Moses obeyed again. He reached out. He grabbed the serpent. And it became a rod again. This was a sign. It was a sign that God had appeared to Moses. It was a sign that God was with him. It was a sign that God would empower him. It was a sign that God would do through him what he could not do on his own.

The Leprous Hand (Exodus 4:6-7):

God gave Moses another sign. He told him to put his hand in his bosom. Moses obeyed. He put his hand in his bosom. And when he took it out, it was leprous. It was white as snow. It was diseased. It was unclean. It was dead. Moses’ hand was leprous. But God told him to put it back in his bosom. Moses obeyed. He put it back. And when he took it out again, it was restored. It was healed. It was whole. It was clean. It was alive. This was another sign. It was a sign of cleansing. It was a sign of restoration. It was a sign of life.

The Water Becomes Blood (Exodus 4:8-9):

God gave Moses a third sign. If they would not believe the first two signs, Moses was to take water from the river and pour it on dry land. The water would become blood. It would be a sign of judgment. It would be a sign of power. It would be a sign of God’s authority over nature. It would be a sign of God’s authority over Egypt. It would be a sign of God’s authority over the gods of Egypt.

I Am Not Eloquent (Exodus 4:10):

Moses made another excuse. “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” Moses was saying, “I cannot speak. I am not good with words. I am not a public speaker. I am not a communicator. I am not a preacher. I am not a leader.” Moses was focusing on his weakness. Moses was focusing on his inability. Moses was focusing on his inadequacy. He was looking at himself instead of looking at God. He was looking at his limitations instead of looking at God’s power. He was looking at his insufficiency instead of looking at God’s sufficiency.

Who Hath Made Man’s Mouth? (Exodus 4:11-12):

God answered Moses. He asked a question. “Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?” God was reminding Moses who He is. God is the creator. God is the one who made the mouth. God is the one who made the eyes. God is the one who made the ears. God is the one who gives speech. God is the one who gives sight. God is the one who gives hearing. If God made the mouth, He can make it speak. If God made the eyes, He can make them see. If God made the ears, He can make them hear. And God said, “Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.” God would be with him. God would teach him. God would give him the words. God would give him the message. God would give him the ability. God would give him the power.

Send By the Hand of Him Whom Thou Wilt Send (Exodus 4:13):

Moses made one more excuse. “O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.” Moses was saying, “Send someone else. Send anyone else. Send anyone but me. I do not want to go. I do not want to speak. I do not want to lead. I do not want to be your vessel. Send someone else.” This was not a new excuse. This was the same excuse in a different form. It was still doubt. It was still unbelief. It was still disobedience. It was still rebellion. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses.

The Anger of the LORD (Exodus 4:14-17):

God was angry. God was patient. God was longsuffering. God had answered every excuse. God had given every reassurance. God had provided every sign. But Moses still refused. Moses still hesitated. Moses still delayed. And God’s anger was kindled. But even in His anger, God was merciful. God provided Aaron. Aaron was Moses’ brother. Aaron was a Levite. Aaron could speak well. Aaron would be Moses’ spokesman. Aaron would be Moses’ mouth. Aaron would speak the words that God would give to Moses. And Moses would be to Aaron instead of God. Moses would receive the word from God and give it to Aaron. Aaron would speak it to the people. God also told Moses to take the rod. The rod that became a serpent. The rod that was used to perform signs. Moses would use it to do signs. He would use it to demonstrate God’s power.

The Lesson for Us:

We all have excuses. We all have reasons why we cannot obey. We all have weaknesses. We all have insecurities. We all have doubts. We all have fears. But God is not limited by our limitations. God is not hindered by our weaknesses. God is not stopped by our inadequacies. When God calls, He equips. When God sends, He provides. When God commands, He empowers. What is in your hand? What has God given you? What is your rod? What is your staff? What is your skill? What is your ability? What is your resource? Give it to God. Let Him use it. Let Him transform it. Let Him multiply it. Let Him demonstrate His power through it. And do not make excuses. Do not delay. Do not hesitate. Do not refuse. Go where He sends you. Speak what He commands you. Do what He asks you. He will be with you. He will be with your mouth. He will teach you what to say. He will empower you. He will use you. He will glorify His name through you. And you will see signs and wonders follow your obedience.

Question for the Day — Sunday, 25th October 2026:

What is in your hand? What has God given you that He wants to use? Are you making excuses, or are you obeying? God has called you. God has equipped you. God has empowered you. Go. Speak. Do. And watch what He will do.
