²⁷ And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
²⁸ And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
²⁹ And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
³⁰ And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.
³¹ Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
³² And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
³³ And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

Verse 27: The Ass Sees What Balaam Cannot
Balaam was on his way to curse Israel for financial gain, despite God’s clear warning not to go. The donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the path with a drawn sword and fell down under Balaam. Balaam, blinded by greed and stubbornness, could not see the spiritual danger. His anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey. This reveals how our own spiritual blindness can cause us to mistreat those who are actually trying to protect us. The ass was more spiritually perceptive than the prophet!
Verse 28: The Lord Opens the Mouth of the Ass
“And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass.” This is one of the most unusual miracles in Scripture—God caused a donkey to speak with a human voice to rebuke a prophet. This demonstrates God’s sovereignty over all creation. He can use anyone or anything to deliver His message. If God can use a donkey, He can certainly use you! The donkey’s words reveal God’s mercy—the animal had faithfully served Balaam and only acted to save his life.
Verse 29: Balaam’s Anger and Blindness
Balaam’s response is shocking: “Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.” Instead of pausing to consider why his faithful donkey had acted strangely, Balaam was furious and ready to kill her. His anger revealed his spiritual condition—he was so consumed by greed and his own agenda that he could not see the spiritual battle unfolding around him.
Verse 30: The Donkey’s Rebuke
The donkey’s response is both logical and convicting: “Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee?” The animal reminded Balaam of her years of faithful service—she had never behaved this way before. This was a clear sign that something unusual was happening, but Balaam was too blind to see it. Sometimes God uses the most unexpected voices to speak truth to us—we must be humble enough to listen.
Verse 31: The Lord Opens Balaam’s Eyes
“Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD.” Until this moment, Balaam was spiritually blind. He could not see the angel standing right in front of him with a drawn sword. But when God opened his eyes, he saw the truth and fell on his face in worship and fear. This shows that spiritual vision is a gift from God. Without Him, we are blind to the spiritual realities around us.
Verses 32-33: The Angel’s Warning
The angel of the LORD rebuked Balaam: “I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me.” The angel had been sent to block Balaam’s path because his way was evil. The donkey had saved Balaam’s life three times by turning away. The angel declared: “Unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.” The donkey was Balaam’s deliverer, not his enemy. How often do we get angry at the very things God is using to save us?

Pray: Father, thank You for every warning You send my way. Help me not to be stubborn or hard-hearted when You try to redirect my path. Let me recognize Your voice—whether through Your Word, Your Spirit, or even unexpected messengers.

Pray: Lord, give me the humility to listen to anyone You send to speak truth to me. Do not let me despise the messenger because of who they are. If You can speak through a donkey, You can speak through anyone—help me to have ears to hear.

💬 ADDITIONAL REFLECTION
The story of Balaam and his donkey is one of the most unusual and instructive passages in Scripture.
Balaam was a prophet who had heard from God, yet he was blinded by his own greed and ambition. He was so determined to go and curse Israel for financial reward that he could not see the angel of the Lord standing right in front of him with a drawn sword. His faithful donkey, however, saw what he could not and tried to save his life.
This passage reveals a profound truth: spiritual blindness is dangerous. When we become consumed with our own desires, we can miss the warnings God places before us. We can become angry at the very people and circumstances God is using to protect us. We may think we are pursuing a blessing, when in reality we are heading toward destruction.
“The LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD.” This is the turning point. When we humble ourselves and ask God to open our eyes, we begin to see the truth. We see His presence, His protection, and His warnings.
What is the “angel” standing in your path today? What is the “donkey”—the unexpected messenger or circumstance—trying to tell you? Are you listening, or are you striking out in anger?
The greatest lesson is this: God is always working to protect us, even when we cannot see it. The obstacles and delays we complain about may be His loving hand saving us from disaster.
