BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 SAMUEL 17:20-37

Basic Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:20-37 (King James Version)

20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

Prayer Points and Declarations

1. Rising Early to the Battle

• Scripture Ref: v. 20

• Prayer Point: Father, give me the diligence of David to rise early and go where You send me. Let me not delay when there is a battle to be fought or a reproach to be removed. I will be prompt in my obedience.

• Declaration: I rise early to answer the call of battle! I do not shrink back from confrontation when God’s honor is at stake. I go where He sends me without hesitation .

2. Leaving Lesser Responsibilities for Greater Assignments

• Scripture Ref: v. 20, 22

• Prayer Point: Lord, teach me to steward the small assignments faithfully so that I can be trusted with the greater ones. David left the sheep with a keeper—help me to release lesser things when You call me to the front lines.

• Declaration: I am faithful over small things, and God entrusts me with greater! I release what is in my hand when He calls me to a new level of battle .

3. Running Toward the Fight

• Scripture Ref: v. 22

• Prayer Point: Father, while others flee from the enemy, give me the courage to run toward the battle. Let me not be among those who hide when giants arise. I will advance when You say advance.

• Declaration: I run toward the battle, not away from it! I do not flee from giants; I face them with faith. My God is with me, and I will not be afraid .

4. A Holy Indignation Against Defiance of God

• Scripture Ref: v. 23-26

• Prayer Point: Lord, let my heart burn with righteous anger when Your name is defied. Give me the same spirit as David—one that cannot tolerate the reproach of the living God going unanswered.

• Declaration: I will not stand by while the enemy defies the living God! I am stirred with holy indignation against every giant that mocks God’s name and God’s people .

5. Asking the Right Questions

• Scripture Ref: v. 26

• Prayer Point: Father, while others were asking “Who can fight him?” David asked “What shall be done for the one who kills him?” Change the questions I ask. Help me to focus on victory, not on the size of the enemy.

• Declaration: I ask questions of faith, not fear! I do not wonder if the giant can be defeated; I declare that he will be defeated. I am the one who takes away reproach from God’s people .

6. Not Deterred by Criticism

• Scripture Ref: v. 28-30

• Prayer Point: Lord, when I face criticism from those closest to me—like David faced from Eliab—give me the grace to not be offended or deterred. Help me to ignore the voices of doubt and focus on the assignment.

• Declaration: I will not be silenced by critics! Even those who should encourage me may misunderstand me, but I will not let their words stop me. I have a cause, and I will fulfill it .

7. Declaring “Is There Not a Cause?”

• Scripture Ref: v. 29

• Prayer Point: Father, let me never lose sight of the cause. The cause is Your glory, Your name, and Your people. When distractions come, remind me why I am fighting.

• Declaration: There is a cause! I fight for the glory of God and the deliverance of His people. I will not be distracted by petty criticism or personal offense .

8. Refusing to Let Fear Paralyze

• Scripture Ref: v. 31-32

• Prayer Point: Lord, David said, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him.” I say the same over my life. I refuse to let fear grip my heart. No giant, no circumstance, no threat will cause my heart to fail.

• Declaration: My heart does not fail! I will not be intimidated by the size of the enemy. The battle belongs to the Lord, and He is greater than any giant .

9. Testifying of Past Victories

• Scripture Ref: v. 34-36

• Prayer Point: Father, help me to remember and rehearse Your past faithfulness. Every lion and bear You delivered me from is preparation for the Goliath before me. I declare Your track record of victory.

• Declaration: I remember the lion and the bear! Every past deliverance is a down payment for the victory I am about to see. The same God who saved me then will save me now .

10. Confidence in the God of Deliverance

• Scripture Ref: v. 37

• Prayer Point: Lord, I declare with David: “The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” I trust You completely for my current battle.

• Declaration: He who delivered me before will deliver me now! My confidence is not in my ability but in my God. The same God of past victories is the God of present battles. I go forward in His name .
