BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 TIMOTHY 4: 8 -16

BASIC SCRIPTURE: TUESDAY, 15TH SEPTEMBER 2026 — 1 TIMOTHY 4:8-16 (KJV)

  1. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

  2. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

  3. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

  4. These things command and teach.

  5. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

  6. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

  7. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

  8. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

  9. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — TUESDAY, 15TH SEPTEMBER 2026

Key Verse: 1 Timothy 4:8 — “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

Bodily Exercise and Godliness (Verse 8):

Paul contrasts bodily exercise with godliness. Physical training is not evil. It is good. It is beneficial. It has value. It promotes health. It builds strength. It improves endurance. It is useful. But it has limited value. It profits a little. It is temporary. It is for this life only. It fades with age. It does not last. It does not save. It does not sanctify. It does not prepare for eternity. But godliness is profitable unto all things. It has value in every area. It benefits the body, the soul, and the spirit. It has promise of the life that now is. It brings blessings in this life. It brings peace, joy, hope, and purpose. It has promise of the life that is to come. It secures eternal life. It prepares for eternity. It guarantees a reward. Godliness is not just one thing among many. It is the main thing. It is the best thing. It is the essential thing.

Labour and Suffer Reproach (Verse 10):

Paul labours. He works hard. He gives his all. He makes sacrifices. He suffers reproach. He is insulted. He is despised. He is persecuted. He is rejected. He is attacked. He is opposed. Why? Because he trusts in the living God. He trusts in the God who is the Saviour of all men. God is the Saviour of all men in a general sense. He is the source of all life. He is the provider of all good. He is the sustainer of all creation. But especially, He is the Saviour of those who believe. They are saved from sin. They are saved from death. They are saved from hell. They are saved from judgment. They are saved for eternity. Paul trusts this God. He labours for this God. He suffers for this God. And he does not give up.

Be an Example (Verse 12):

Paul warns Timothy not to let anyone despise his youth. Timothy was young. He was a young leader. He was a young pastor. Some might look down on him because of his age. They might ignore him. They might dismiss him. They might disrespect him. Paul says, do not let that happen. Do not give them a reason to despise you. Instead, be an example. Be a model. Be a pattern. Be a standard. Be an example in word. Speak wisely. Speak kindly. Speak truthfully. Be an example in conversation. Live consistently. Live uprightly. Live faithfully. Be an example in charity. Love fervently. Love genuinely. Love sacrificially. Be an example in spirit. Be humble. Be gentle. Be joyful. Be peaceful. Be patient. Be kind. Be good. Be faithful. Be self-controlled. Be an example in faith. Trust fully. Trust consistently. Trust courageously. Be an example in purity. Be morally pure. Be sexually pure. Be spiritually pure. Be an example in every area.

Give Attendance (Verse 13):

Paul tells Timothy to give attendance to three things. Reading. Exhortation. Doctrine. Reading the Scriptures. Reading the Word. Reading the law. Reading the prophets. Reading the gospels. Reading the epistles. Reading constantly. Reading carefully. Reading prayerfully. Exhortation. Encouraging others. Urging others. Comforting others. Building others up. Doctrine. Teaching the truth. Teaching sound doctrine. Teaching what is right. Teaching what is true. Teaching what is according to godliness. Timothy was to devote himself to these things. They were to be his priority. They were to be his focus. They were to be his passion. They were to be his life.

Neglect Not the Gift (Verse 14):

Timothy had a gift. It was given by prophecy. It was confirmed by the laying on of hands. It was a spiritual gift. It was a ministry gift. It was a leadership gift. It was a teaching gift. It was a pastoral gift. Paul warns him not to neglect it. Do not let it lie unused. Do not let it grow cold. Do not let it be buried. Do not let it be wasted. Stir it up. Use it. Develop it. Exercise it. It is a gift from God. It is a gift for the church. It is a gift for the kingdom. It is a gift for the world. Do not neglect it.

Meditate and Give Thyself Wholly (Verse 15):

Paul commands Timothy to meditate on these things. Think about them. Reflect on them. Ponder them. Consider them. Examine them. Apply them. And give yourself wholly to them. Be fully devoted. Be completely committed. Be totally absorbed. Be entirely focused. Do not be half-hearted. Do not be lukewarm. Do not be distracted. Do not be divided. Be all in. Be wholly given. Then your profiting will appear to all. Your progress will be evident. Your growth will be visible. Your maturity will be seen. Everyone will know. Everyone will see. Everyone will benefit.

Take Heed (Verse 16):

Paul gives a final command. Take heed unto yourself. Watch your own life. Guard your own heart. Keep your own soul. Maintain your own purity. Preserve your own faith. Protect your own doctrine. And take heed unto the doctrine. Guard the truth. Guard the gospel. Guard the teaching. Guard the faith once delivered. Continue in them. Persevere. Persist. Endure. Do not stop. Do not turn back. Do not give up. For in doing this, you will save both yourself and those who hear you. Your faithfulness will bring salvation. Your perseverance will bring deliverance. Your steadfastness will bring life to others.

Question for the Day — Tuesday, 15th September 2026:

Are you pursuing godliness? Are you an example to believers? Are you giving attendance to reading, exhortation, and doctrine? Are you using your gift? Are you meditating on these things? And are you taking heed to yourself and to the doctrine?
