DCLM Daily Manna Devotional 8th April 2026 – He Knows Your Name
Text: Isaiah 45:1-7
Key Verse: “I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me” (Isaiah 45:4b).
God is the Creator of the whole universe. He knows all things, and there is nothing hidden from His sight. From the beginning to the end, He is ever present. He knows His children and calls them by their names. He identifies with them and calls them His own.
In our passage today, God is speaking to Cyrus, a Persian king whom He had chosen and called even before he knew Him. God revealed His plans for him, promising to go before him and make the crooked places straight. God called Cyrus by name and gave him a title, even though Cyrus did not personally know the God of Israel. God’s sovereign power is clearly demonstrated here as He chooses and uses a pagan king to fulfill His purposes for His people, Israel. Cyrus would later allow the Jews to return to their land and rebuild the temple.
This act of calling Cyrus by name shows that God knows every individual personally, whether they acknowledge Him or not. It also emphasizes that God can use anyone to accomplish His will on earth. If God could use Cyrus, a king who did not know Him, to deliver Israel, how much more can He use you, His child, to fulfill His divine agenda.
As believers, we should take comfort in the fact that our heavenly Father knows us personally and has a unique plan for our lives. We are not just faces in the crowd; He calls us by name. This should give us confidence to trust Him fully, even when we don’t understand His ways. We must also be willing to be used by God for His purposes, just as Cyrus was, knowing that God’s plans are always greater than our understanding.

This is a powerful reminder that God’s sovereignty extends beyond the boundaries of our understanding. When we look at the life of Cyrus, we see a man who had no personal relationship with God, yet God chose him as an instrument for a divine assignment. This challenges us to stop making excuses about our qualifications, background, or level of spiritual maturity. If God could use a pagan king to fulfill prophecy and restore the nation of Israel, He can certainly use you.
Many believers struggle with feelings of insignificance. They look at their lives and think, “I’m just an ordinary person. What can I really do for God?” But the story of Cyrus destroys that lie. God called him by name before he ever knew God. That means God already had a plan for his life before Cyrus even woke up one morning as king.
The same applies to you. Before you were born, before you took your first breath, God knew your name and had already mapped out assignments for you. Your job is not to figure everything out — your job is to stay available, stay obedient, and stay faithful.
Notice also that God didn’t wait for Cyrus to get his theology right before using him. That doesn’t mean doctrine doesn’t matter — it means God’s purposes will not be stopped by human limitations. If you’re waiting until you feel “ready enough” or “holy enough” before stepping out, you’ll be waiting forever. Step out in faith, and let God handle the rest.
The key verse says God surnamed Cyrus — meaning He gave him a title of honor. God didn’t just call his name; He elevated him. When God uses you, He doesn’t just get the job done — He also lifts you up in the process. You come out of obedience not just having served God, but having been honored by God.
So whatever you’re facing today, remember: the God who knew Cyrus by name knows your name too. And He has not forgotten His plan for your life.
Prayer Point: Father, help me to trust Your sovereignty even when I don’t understand Your ways. Use me for Your glory, just as You used Cyrus. Give me the courage to step out in obedience, knowing that You have called me by name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
