Assured Defence
KEY VERSE “There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early” (Psalm 46:4,5).
Bible Reading:
Psalm 46:1-11 (KJV)
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
When it comes to matters of faith and the assurance that God is able to save to the uttermost, there are three schools of thought. First is the group of those who feel secure but are not sure. The second group includes those who are sure but not secure. In the third group are those who not only feel secure but also are equally sure. The first group includes believers in Christ who are saved but lack assurance of salvation. There’s great jeopardy here! In the second group are professing Christians who believe that once they are saved, they are saved forever. This is contrary to what Scripture uniformly teaches.
The third group includes born-again believers who experience a warm and secure relationship with Christ each day. The only basis of their salvation is the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary. They believe in the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ alone. They love the brethren and are obedient to Christ’s commandments. No wonder they feel very secure, not in their works but in what Christ has already done for them.
In today’s text, the psalmist advanced some salient negative points that can affect earthly living. There’s the roaring of mountains, the shaking of the earth, and the rage of heathens. None of these consequential events can confront the might of the eternal God, the Almighty. As believers, we must understand the place of God’s majesty in human affairs. We live in a world where myriads of troubles abound. Yet our God is above them all. The psalmist gave us the needed assurance coming from the personality and presence of Jehovah God. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The believer’s assurance is grounded in this dual power: God’s presence and His immutable personality.
The Bible says that “they that know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” There’s a knowledge available to believers in Christ that mere mortals are not privy to: it’s the understanding that God rules in the affairs of men and even in invisible matters. He is the River that gladdens the city of God. He controls the wind, the inanimate world, as well as animated life. The oceans and hills are under His power. This is the source of believers’ security and safety that the psalmist celebrates. This is the reason believers of all ages are not confounded by the situations and circumstances in which they find themselves. This is why living outside the will of God is dangerous. This is why sinners must urgently repent of their sins and surrender to God through Jesus Christ.

COMMENTARY
1. The Three Schools of Thought on Assurance – The devotional identifies three groups: those who feel secure but are not sure (saved but lacking assurance), those who are sure but not secure (believing in eternal security without scriptural basis), and those who are both secure and sure (born-again believers with a daily relationship with Christ). The third group is the ideal—assurance rooted in Christ’s finished work and a daily walk with Him.
2. God’s Presence as Our Defence – The psalmist declares that God is in the midst of His city; she shall not be moved. The believer’s security is not in circumstances but in God’s presence. No matter how the earth shakes or the mountains roar, God is a very present help in trouble. His presence is our defence.
3. The River That Gladdens – The “river” in the psalm symbolizes the life, joy, and peace that flow from God’s presence. It is not a physical river but a spiritual one—the streams of God’s grace that refresh and sustain His people. This river never runs dry, and it makes glad the city of God.
4. Knowing God Brings Strength – The devotional emphasizes that “they that know their God shall be strong, and do exploits” (Daniel 11:32). Knowing God—His character, His power, His promises—produces unshakable confidence. When we know who God is, we are not confounded by the troubles of life.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Emphasis on Assurance – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes the importance of assurance of salvation. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that believers can know they are saved and have a daily relationship with Christ. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to rest in God’s presence and to trust Him in every situation.
About DCLM and Daily Manna
The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and assurance of salvation.
DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to trust in God’s presence and to walk in assurance.
