TOPIC: At Thy Word!

KEY VERSE
“And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah” (1 Kings 17:16).
BIBLE READING: 1 Kings 17:8-16 (KJV)
8 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.
16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.
MESSAGE
Prophet Elijah’s entrance into Scripture was as dramatic as the rest of his life, right up to the moment he was caught up to heaven in a chariot of fire. He first appears as the messenger of God’s judgment—a severe drought upon Israel under the wicked King Ahab. God then miraculously sustained His servant beside the brook Cherith, where ravens brought him food morning and evening. When the brook dried up, the word of the Lord came again: “Arise, get thee to Zarephath… behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.”
The scene shifts to a desperate home. A poor widow, with her only son, was gathering two sticks to prepare their final meal before death. By every human calculation, this was the end. When Elijah asked for water and then for bread, she answered with painful honesty: she had only a handful of meal and a little oil left. They planned to eat it and die.
Yet Elijah knew something greater than the circumstances. The place where God had sent him could not be a place of death. God’s word would stand. He declared: “Fear not… For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.”
The widow chose to act on that word. She made the cake for the man of God first. And the miracle happened. The barrel of meal did not waste. The cruse of oil did not fail. They ate for many days—“according to the word of the LORD.”
This is the same principle Peter later experienced when he said, “At Thy word I will let down the net,” and received a boat-sinking catch. Every miracle in Elijah’s ministry flowed from one source: the unfailing word of the Lord.
Today the world groans under failing economies, unstable governments, and collapsing systems—just as Israel suffered under drought and famine. Human strategies keep disappointing. The only sure deliverance is the same God who met the widow of Zarephath. He still demands one thing: total trust in His word as revealed through Jesus Christ.
Many continue to suffer lack simply because they will not take God at His word. But for those who stand firmly on His promises—even when everything looks contrary—His word will never fail. The barrel will not waste. The oil will not run dry.
Learn to say with faith, “At Thy word!” and watch the manifold blessings of God’s sacred will unfold in your life.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Fallen man can rise again through the power of God’s word.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Proverbs 15–17
- Father, give me the grace to take You at Your word no matter how impossible the situation appears.
- Lord, let every “barrel of meal” and “cruse of oil” in my life refuse to waste or fail, in Jesus’ name.
- Every spirit of fear and finality speaking death over my situation, be silenced by the word of the Lord.
- Father, open my eyes to see Your provision even in seasons of scarcity.
- Lord, make me a channel of supernatural supply to others as You used the widow of Zarephath.
- I take God at His word today!
- My barrel of meal shall not waste, and my cruse of oil shall not fail!
- According to the word of the Lord, I and my household shall eat and be satisfied in every season!
- The word of the Lord concerning my life shall stand, and no circumstance shall reverse it!
- I walk in the supernatural provision of Jehovah Jireh, in Jesus’ mighty name!
Amen.
