Light of the World

KEY VERSE
“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:5).
Bible Reading:
John 9:1-7 (KJV)
1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
MESSAGE
A renowned Christian leader, Dr. Leonard Ravenhill, author of Why Revival Tarries, once warned, “The world is not waiting for a new definition of Christianity, but a new demonstration of Christianity.”
Authentic Christianity is demonstrative. When our Lord, Jesus Christ declared, “I am the light of the world,” He meant every word and spoke with a sense of solemn responsibility. He had just healed a man who was born blind. In what appears to allude to the doctrine of transmigration (the presupposition that people’s afflictions are punishment for their pre-existent sins) prevalent then, His disciples asked whose sin caused the man’s blindness. Christ did not lend credence to that notion but emphatically asserted that the man’s case was an opportunity for the display of God’s miraculous work. He affirmed that He must fulfil the mandate that brought Him to the world, “while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” He emphatically declared Himself as the light of the world.
Like Christ, Christians must seize every opportunity to do good before it is lost. To be light is to expose darkness, to illuminate paths, to burn with purpose. And as Christ is, so are we in this world, says the Bible. Therefore, the sacred burden of lighting the world now rests upon His followers. Tragically, modern religious professors who lack transformation claim the Light but cast no glow. The early Christians turned cities upside down not with polished sermons, but with radiant lives, healing the broken, embracing the outcast, living as reflections of the Radiant One, Jesus Christ.
To the one still in shadow: turn to Christ. The Light has come. Embrace its healing and redemptive power and reflect it so that others can be saved through it. As you turn your life over to Jesus, He will make you shine just like Him. Let your life rise above mere existence. Live in such a way that darkness winces at your entry. Speak the truth that liberates. Extend kindness that shatters cynicism. As He is, so must we be, unapologetically bright in a dimming world.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The light of Christ is so intense that no one can abide in it and fail to reflect it

COMMENTARY
1. Christ, the Light of the World – Jesus declared Himself to be the light of the world. His light exposes darkness, illuminates truth, and brings healing. The healing of the blind man was a demonstration of His light overcoming physical and spiritual darkness. As believers, we are called to reflect that same light.
2. The Urgency of the Work – Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” There is urgency in the mission. We must seize every opportunity to do good, to share the gospel, and to demonstrate God’s love. The night is coming when opportunities will cease.
3. Demonstrating Christianity, Not Just Defining It – Dr. Ravenhill’s quote captures the heart of the message: the world needs a demonstration of Christianity, not just a definition. Authentic Christianity is visible, active, and transformative. It is not enough to claim the Light; we must cast a glow.
4. The Call to Reflect Christ – The devotional calls believers to live as reflections of Christ. Our lives should be so radiant that darkness cannot abide. We must speak truth, extend kindness, and live with purpose. As Christ is, so are we in this world.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Radiant Living – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes that believers must be light in a dark world. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that our lives should demonstrate the reality of the gospel. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to shine for Christ and to lead others out of darkness.
About DCLM and Daily Manna
The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and radiant Christian living.
DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to be light in a dark world.
Prayer Reflection
Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the world. Shine through me today. Help me to demonstrate Your love and truth in tangible ways. Give me urgency to do good while there is still time. May my life reflect Your radiance so that others may be drawn to You. In Your precious name. Amen.
