Ambitions Cut Short

KEY VERSE
“In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand” (Job 34:20).
Bible Reading:
Job 34:20-22 (KJV)
20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
MESSAGE
Stories abound about dictators who wanted to perpetuate themselves in power. In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was named dictator for life (dictator perpetuo) of Rome. North Korea’s revered founder, Kim Il-Sung, ordered his doctors to find a way to make him live to 100, taking treatments that ranged from the bizarre to the sinister to stay young. Kim So-Yeon, his personal physician for many years before she defected to South Korea in 1992, led research at a “Longevity Centre” set up to help in Kim’s quest for a longer life, according to a CNN report. It didn’t work – he died at 82.
Man may propose, but God makes the ultimate decision. Nothing exists in perpetuity. Elihu, one of the three argumentative friends of Job, made the remark about the brevity of life. His narrative about man’s attempt to control others oppressively wasn’t exactly applicable to Job, who was a righteous man, by God’s own confession. His statement, nonetheless, is a clear fact about the futility of man’s attempt to remain in the spotlight forever. Elihu expanded his remarks by honouring the supremacy of God, who sees the ways of men and retains the divine ability to superintend over our affairs. God possesses the unique ability to bring an end to the regime of proud dictators, who wish to oppress their subjects forever.
This chapter offers significant insights for leaders who maintain a proud demeanour in their interactions. Reflecting on the downfalls of historical dictators serves as a crucial reminder for contemporary leaders. While the advice from Job’s friends may not have alleviated his suffering, their observations on the fleeting nature of life and the eventual consequences of wickedness provide valuable lessons that can inform our own lives and decisions.
The dialogue surrounding Job reveals several profound lessons. It emphasises that God is just and will reward everyone based on their deeds, regardless of status. Additionally, it reflects on the fleeting nature of life, urging humility and repentance to seek God’s mercy. The text advocates against oppression and encourages living a life that, when death comes, even the undertakers will feel sorry. Ultimately, it calls for emulating the humility and compassion of Jesus Christ, which draws many into His grace.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The thought of our own death should keep us humble.

COMMENTARY
1. The Brevity of Life – Elihu’s words remind us that life is fleeting. In a moment, the mighty can be taken away. No amount of power, wealth, or planning can guarantee longevity or control over death. This truth should humble every leader and every person. We are not in control; God is.
2. The Foolishness of Pride – Dictators like Julius Caesar and Kim Il-Sung sought to extend their power and life beyond their natural limits. Their pride led them to believe they could overcome mortality. Yet, they died like everyone else. Pride is foolish because it ignores the sovereignty of God and the reality of human frailty.
3. God’s Sovereign Over All – The text declares that God’s eyes are upon the ways of man, and He sees all their goings. No one can hide their iniquity from Him. He brings down the proud and exalts the humble. God’s justice is certain. Those who oppress others will not escape His judgment.
4. The Call to Humility and Repentance – The devotional calls for humility and repentance. Since life is short and death is certain, we must live in a way that honors God. Oppression, pride, and wickedness lead to destruction. Emulating the humility and compassion of Jesus leads to grace and eternal reward.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Humble Leadership – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes the importance of humility and servant leadership. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that leaders must not be proud or oppressive but must follow the example of Christ. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to live with eternity in view.
