KEY VERSE
“The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat…Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase” (Proverbs 13:4, 11).

Bible Reading:
Proverbs 13:1-11 (KJV)

1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
8 The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.
9 The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

MESSAGE

In 2002, a man won a foreign lottery fraud jackpot he had not entered, but a phone call told him otherwise. In his desperation for quick wealth, he sold property, borrowed heavily, and sent it all as “processing fees.” Within months, he was bankrupt, humiliated, and attempted suicide. He wanted wealth without work, and it broke him. Scripture teaches what prosperity preachers often deny: labour is the path to lasting gain. Diligence, not declarations. Integrity, not indulgence. But today, many pulpits bypass patience and promote “sudden breakthroughs”, a spirituality of shortcuts that mocks divine order. Our passage provides instructive guidelines on how to avoid heartaches associated with inordinate ambition and compulsive tendency to be wealthy without obeying the laws of prosperity.

The fool mocks instruction (v.1), rushes to shame (v.5), and suffers want (v.18). Prosperity without principle is poison. The riches that rain without roots will rot. God honours steady hands and upright hearts, not empty confessions that skip the sweat of obedience.

Diligence is dying in many denominations globally, not because God has changed, but because many preachers have. We now offer shortcuts to success, bypassing the narrow road of obedience, hard work, and integrity. Many so-called Christians now run after sermons that emphasise harvests with no sowing, mansions with no mission, and abundance with no accountability.

As believers, we must beware of the doctrine that exalts desire but despises discipline. The Spirit does not bless laziness dressed in religious language. God honours those who rise early, who labour quietly, who build slowly, and who refuse to bend their principles for profit.

The Scripture makes it clear that the cross is not a lottery ticket. True prosperity, spiritual and material, flows from righteousness and hard work. The diligent do not just dream; they do. They plough through mornings of obscurity to reap evenings of honour. Beware of sermons that glamourise gain but despise discipline. The Lord who feeds the birds still commands them to fly and seek their food.

God is not against wealth, but He is against worshipping it. He is not against increase, but He detests iniquity in its pursuit. So if you must prosper, do so with patience. If you must rise, rise with righteousness. For only what is built by truth shall stand.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Quick riches fade; faithful hands flourish

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Proverbs 18-20

COMMENTARY

1. The Snare of Quick Riches – The story of the man defrauded by a fake lottery is a sobering warning. Desperation for sudden wealth led him to sell property, borrow heavily, and lose everything. Wealth without work is a trap that promises much but delivers destruction. Proverbs warns that wealth gotten by vanity will be diminished.

2. Diligence Is the Divine Path to Prosperity – The contrast in the passage is clear: the sluggard desires but has nothing; the diligent is made fat. God honours hard work and steady effort. The diligent rise early, labour quietly, and build slowly. Their prosperity is rooted in obedience and integrity, not in shortcuts.

3. The Danger of Shortcut Spirituality – The devotional warns against preachers who promise sudden breakthroughs without sowing, mansions without mission, and abundance without accountability. This is a warped gospel that mocks divine order. The Spirit does not bless laziness dressed in religious language.

4. Wealth Must Be Built on Righteousness – God is not against wealth; He is against the worship of it. He is not against increase; He detests iniquity in its pursuit. True prosperity flows from righteous living and honest labour. Only what is built by truth shall stand.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Diligence and Integrity – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes diligence and integrity in all aspects of life. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that believers must not pursue wealth through ungodly means or shortcuts. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to build prosperity through patience, hard work, and righteousness.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and diligence in all aspects of life.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to pursue prosperity through integrity and hard work.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, deliver me from the snare of quick riches. Help me to be diligent and honest in all my dealings. Give me patience to build slowly and integrity to pursue wealth through righteous means. Teach me to value hard work over shortcuts. May my prosperity be built on truth and honour You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
